100 faces of the infected blood scandal

More than 30,000 Britons were infected with HIV and Hepatitis C after being given contaminated blood products in the 1970s and 1980s.

Around 3,000 people have died as a result of the scandal, while many more still live under the shadow of health problems, debilitating treatments and stigma.

Now, the findings of a public inquiry, first announced in 2017, have finally been published.

These are 100 faces of infected blood victims that either they, or their families, have shared with Sky News.

3D-printed blood vessels could improve heart bypass outcomes, research suggests
3D-printed blood vessels which closely mimic the properties of human veins could transform the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, scientists have said. In a two-stage process, a team of researchers led by the University of Edinburgh's School of Engineering used a rotating spindle integrated into a 3D printer to create tubular grafts made from a water-based gel. Next, they reinforced the printed graft in a process known as electrospinning, which uses high voltage to draw out thin nanofibers, coating the artificial blood vessel in biodegradable polyester molecules.

Hayley Shaw, 44, previously led an active lifestyle but pelvic pain and heavy periods led to the discovery of two cancerous uterine polyps in June 2023. Hayley's world was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with a rare form of uterine cancer which typically affects women over 70. She was then told she would have an induced menopause and need a hysterectomy - preventing her from having any more children. Following her hysterectomy, Hayley - a former image consultant - returned home for a few weeks only to begin feeling unwell again.

A vaccine being used by the NHS to prevent shingles could also significantly delay the onset of dementia, according to new research that has left scientists baffled. The study on more than 200,000 older people shows those who were given the 'recombinant' vaccine Shingrix were diagnosed with dementia an average of 164 days later than those given an older-style jab. The effect was as pronounced as the first new drugs for Alzheimer's disease, which are currently awaiting approval by UK medicines regulators.
