For Ennio, the director turned the camera on his beloved collaborator to make a moving portrait of the composer featuring testimonies from artists and directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Marco Bellocchio, Giuliano Montaldo, Dario Argento, Clint Eastwood, Joan Baez, Quentin Tarantino and more.

Music Box Films will release the film in New York at the Film Forum on February 9, 2024, with a national expansion and home entertainment release to follow.

Prior to that, there will also be a special screening in New York on December 2 as part of the Museum of Modern Art’s Morricone retrospective which opens on December 1.

The show, which has been put together in collaboration with Cinecittà, will celebrate more than 35 films from across the composer’s nearly 60-year career. The national theatrical release will be accompanied by other Morricone retrospectives throughout the country.

Ennio explores the breadth of Morricone’s career, from his early Italian pop songs to the unforgettable film scores that he wrote for films such as The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, The Thing, Days of Heaven to name but a few.

The production gave Morricone, who died in 2020 at the age of 91, a final chance to recount his career and deconstruct the artistic process that led him to win two Academy Awards and author over 500 unforgettable soundtracks.

Ennio is a moving and memorable documentary profile that will resonate with any cinephile who has a special affection for the movies scored by Morricone, which is to say, it will resonate with any cinephile because Morricone’a artistry is universal,” said Music Box Films’ Brian Andreotti. “To hear the maestro explain his music and methods in his own words one last time is a gift.”

The sale of the film was negotiated by Andreotti and Eva Diederix at Paris-based sales company on behalf of the filmmakers.

“Music Box Films’ commitment to preserving and promoting the artistry of Ennio Morricone is evident,” said Goodfellas Head Of Sales Diederix

“We are convinced they will make the viewing experience more profound for U.S. audiences, who get a rare glimpse into the mind of the Italian master who has shaped the landscape of Hollywood and beyond.”

Ennio was produced by Piano B Produzioni and world premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
