N.W.T. MP Michael McLeod says he doesn't intend to seek re-election.

McLeod, who was first elected as MP in 2015, wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday morning that he plans to finish out his current term, which is his third. He said his decision came after many discussions with his family.

"It has been said many times that elections are designed to ensure opportunity for renewal, and renewal is the lifeblood of democracy," he wrote.

"It is now time for me to pass the torch."

McLeod said he wants to spend more time at home in the North and focus on his grandchildren, who he described as "the centre of my universe."

He said he will be asking the Liberal Party to begin "an open and transparent process" to elect a new candidate before the next federal election.

The next federal election is expected to take place in the fall of 2025.
