Naomi Watts Recalls 'Awkward' Audition Where She Had to Make Out with a 'Very Well-Known Actor'

Naomi Watts said she "did feel a bit rattled" by an ask to make out with an actor during an audition

Naomi Watts is recalling a particularly awkward audition experience.

The actress, 55, joined Jodie Foster, Brie Larson, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Aniston, Ana Sawai and Sofía Vergara for a roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter. At one point, Watts recalled once being asked to simulate a make-out session with a famous actor during an chemistry test.

"I have. Just once, and it was very awkward," Watts shared, after the roundtable's conversation turned toward Anne Hathaway's April comments about once being asked to make out with 10 actors in a day for chemistry tests.

"I was auditioning and I didn’t get the job, so clearly I did not do a good make-out. It was with a very well-known actor. It was mortifying because we didn’t hear a 'cut,' and it just kept going," she said.

"Then they were like, 'Okay, Okay.' And we both were like, 'Oh, sorry, we didn’t hear …' I did feel a bit rattled," she added.

Watts did not name the actor involved or the project she was auditioning for. Aniston, 55, said during the conversation that she had never been asked of anything similar during an audition, while Kidman, 56, joked "maybe secretly I’ve been excited" to make out with a costar.

As the group's conversation surrounding chemistry tests and auditions continued, Watts described chemistry tests between actors as "impossible" and said she was "shockingly bad" at auditioning for roles early in her acting career.

"I could feel the energy in the room where people were like, 'Hurry this along.' I’d even go, 'Yeah, don’t worry, I’m out of your way in one second. You don’t even have to look me in the eye and shake my hand,' " she recalled.

Watts said that her Mulholland Drive director David Lynch was one of the first filmmakers she met with who handled casting differently than other auditions.

"He said, 'Tell me about yourself.' And I fell into it, this conversation," she recalled. "I was like, 'Wait, really? You want to take time with me? You want to know s--- about me and how I was raised and all of that?' And then I got the job. I didn’t even have to audition."

Back in April, Hathaway, 41, told V Magazine while promoting her movie The Idea of You that in her experience, "it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry" during the 2000s.

"I was told, 'We have 10 guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?' " she recalled of one audition. "And I thought, 'Is there something wrong with me?' because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross."
