Natalie Portman and Paul Mescal enjoyed a London hangout with each other.

The Oscar winner, 42, and the Normal People star, 28, were photographed on an outing in North London on Wednesday, May 29, in photos published by Daily Mail.

The two both wore matching white T-shirts, Portman in blue jeans, while Mescal tucked his shirt into dark trousers.

A source tells PEOPLE that Portman and Mescal are just friends.

The sighting comes several months after they participated in Variety's "Actors on Actors" series together, published in December.

Mescal previously starred in the 2022 musical drama Carmen, which was directed by Portman's now-ex-husband Benjamin Millepied, with whom she shares two kids. The pair have finalized their divorce after she filed in July 2023, following 11 years of marriage.

In their Variety conversation, they both complimented each other's work. Mescal called Portman "utterly brilliant" in May December, while Portman told him she was "so impressed" with his work in All of Us Strangers.

At one point during the conversation, Portman called Mescal's filmography choices "always so incredible," specifically his decision to work with "so many first-time" directors.

"How do you know that you’re going to be able to make magic with these people?" she asked.

"It’s a gut feeling," he said. "I feel very lucky that I know what I like. That’s not something that actors talk about enough. I don’t believe in the concept of 'building a career' — I think that comes through cultivating your taste. Films like All of Us Strangers or Aftersun feel very much in conversation with each other. But, also, I don’t want an audience to be bored or to expect that kind of film from me."

Elsewhere during their conversation, Portman asked Mescal about his preparation for the forthcoming Gladiator sequel: "How much time do you spend thinking about the Roman Empire?"

"All day, every day," he joked.

When promoting the conversation on Instagram last year, Portman called the fellow actor "the one and only Paul Mescal."
