Nelly Furtado goes topless on new album cover, reveals how ADHD impacted creating over 400 songs

"My ADHD doesn’t always allow for me to organize creations in a methodical way," Furtado said in a lengthy social media post about her new album.

Nelly Furtado has bared all when it comes to body and mind in a captivating announcement for her new album 7.

The Canadian pop star revealed news of her new album Thursday in an emotional social media post, in which she premiered a topless photo of herself as the album cover and opened up about how her ADHD influenced the creation of new music — including the gestation of over 400 songs across the last four years.

"This is going to sound strange and stupid but this isn’t a job for me. It’s super personal. Music is my whole language and life and love and blessing, so sometimes it’s hard for me to wrap that up in a bow," the "Promiscuous" and "I'm Like a Bird" performer wrote on Instagram. "I made 400-500 pieces of music in 4 years. My ADHD doesn’t always allow for me to organize creations in a methodical way so it’s hard to explain how we have chosen 14 songs that magically rose to the top of the heap. Phew - they come together just by nature of being in the same collection, 7, kind of like random seashells that may be similar but not at all alike."

Furtado also stressed that, as a result, the "album can’t be listened to like audio wallpaper," and that she hopes to "provide some portals to trip out and release and escape" via new music.

"I badly need music every single day. I badly need songs to listen to every single day," she finished. "My brain doesn’t even work without music."

In a 2023 interview with FAULT magazine, the 45-year-old first announced that she'd been diagnosed with ADHD as an adult.

"I believe I’ve had it my whole life, but playing instruments six days a week as a kid kept me in check," she told the publication. "So now I’ve been using choreography and getting in the dance studio as a natural way of dealing with my ADHD. I find the discipline really helps my brain. The good news is I’m getting to know my brain really well. I love talking about it, so I’m hoping to share my experience with people and have conversations about it."

Furtado recently mounted a steady mainstream musical comeback, after her last pair of full-length studio albums — 2012's The Spirit Indestructible and 2017's The Ride — debuted to far less fanfare than her 2006 pop opus Loose, her third overall album, and its 2000 forerunner, Whoa, Nelly!

In addition to performing at Coachella in April, Furtado first launched her comeback on the 2023 Dom Dolla single "Eat Your Man," which heavily referenced Furtado's prior "Maneater" tune. She also-teamed with her "Give It to Me" collaborators Justin Timberlake and Timbaland for last year's "Keep Going Up," and promoted the release with an appearance at the 2023 MTV VMAs.
