The new Punggol Coast station on the North-East line will open by 2023, seven years earlier than the original 2030 completion date, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a press release on Wednesday (7 June).

The extension will support developments in Punggol North. The new 1.6km extension will serve the new residential estates at Northshore and Punggol Point districts. It will also serve the Punggol Digital district, where the new campus of the Singapore Institute of Technology is located.

The new station will bring the total number of stations on the NEL to 17, including five interchange stations. According to the LTA, travelling time from Punggol North to city centre and other parts of Singapore will be reduced by up to 15 minutes.

Based on feedback from commuters, there will be more open public spaces at the new station for the public to interact and meet up. Construction of the station is expected to begin in the first half of 2018.
