Netflix Reveals 14 New Video Games Joining Slate, Including ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Mobile Title

Netflix, which has spent the past three years pushing into video games, has announced 14 new game titles soon to join the slate.

Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game will be an exclusive mobile title for Netflix subscribers. Mobile is currently the dominant way to experience games on Netflix, though the company last year said it had rolled out a beta version of a cloud gaming platform for a select number of UK and Canada subscribers. The cloud system, which enables gaming on computers and connected-TVs, is expected to expand more broadly over the next couple of years, pending the results of the beta.

According to the official logline, Tales of the Shire enables players to become a Hobbit from J.R.R Tolkien’s LOTR books. Battling orcs isn’t the order of the day, however. “Greet comfort at the door as you decorate your own Hobbit hole, tend to your garden, fish at the clear ponds, forage wild fruits and herbs, or trade with townsfolks,” the official description says. “Prepare homemade meals to share with fellow Hobbits and foster relationships. Unwind in the place where what matters most are all the little things and help bring the community together to achieve village status in Bywater.”

Three games from Klei Entertainment will also be mobile exclusives: Lab Rat, Don’t Starve Together, and Rotwood. An 18th century detective investigation anchors The Case of the Golden Idol, and casual gaming is the draw with Hearts and Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure. Harmonium: The Musical is described as a “musical adventure” combining interactive sign language with music and visuals.

Cozy Grove, a popular Netflix original game title, will spawn a sequel, Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit, in the coming weeks.

Some new games based on Netflix originals will be making their debuts, among them Perfect Match, Selling Sunset, Emily in Paris and a new iteration of Too Hot to Handle and a spinoff of The Dragon Prince.

“We’re building a games portfolio meant to offer something to every one of our members, no matter your taste or mood,” the company wrote in a blog post.

The game offerings, which will encompass more than 100 titles once the new batch of 14 go online, are included at no additional charge for subscribers. The company has not offered extensive data on game play but members of the senior management team have continued to express confidence in the pursuit of gaming as a long-term strategic objective. In the first quarter, Netflix reached nearly 270 million global subscribers.
