Virgin River has been renewed for a sixth season ahead of the premiere of its fifth instalment later this year.

The announcement was part of the streaming giant's first-ever upfront presentation yesterday (May 17) in which fans were informed they would have to wait a little longer for the fifth season of the show that is due for release in autumn.

However, ahead of the premiere, the well-loved drama series, based on the novels of the same name by Robyn Carr, has been renewed for a sixth season.

Starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson, the show follows Melinda Monroe (Breckenridge), a midwife and nurse practitioner in the remote California town of Virgin River who moves to the area for a fresh start, though she soon realises the town isn't quite as simple and idyllic as she expected.

It has been a breakout success for Netflix, with its most recent fourth season garnering 277 million hours viewed in its first 28 days, coming in at number one in the streamer's Top 10 list for two weeks (per Deadline).

Stars of the show teased fans with what's to come in the upcoming fifth season as filming wrapped. Season four ended with a revelation about Charmaine's (Lauren Hammersley) pregnancy, with the actor alluding to it on an Instagram post showing her with a fake bump.

"THAT'S A WRAP," she announced, adding: "It's my 5th year of pregnancy and I don't know what everyone is complaining about."

Denny star Kai Bradbury posted a series of on-set shots to his Instagram, writing: "That's a season 5 wrap on Denny! @virginriverseries fam, it's gonna be next level and I can't wait for you to visit our beautiful town again soon!"

Meanwhile, Dan Brady actor Benjamin Hollingsworth has also alluded to what is to come in the latest season, especially following the introduction of menacing villain Melissa Montgomery, played by Barbara Pollard.

He told TVLine: "[Fear] is a healthy emotion to have when it comes to her. She's obviously up to no good, and the fact that she's having dinner with Jack and Mel at the end is concerning."

Virgin River seasons 1-4 are streaming now on Netflix. Seasons 5 and 6 have been confirmed.
