Netherlands vs France LIVE!

One of the biggest group-stage clashes of Euro 2024 takes place tonight in Leipzig as Les Bleus takes on the Dutch in Group D. All the build-up has been dominated by the fitness of Kylian Mbappe, who is in a race to feature after suffering a brutal broken nose in the closing stages of France’s win over Austria.

The star forward was initially expected to miss tonight’s game, his team’s toughest of the group stage, and subsequent reports suggested Mbappe would miss the remainder of the group stage, but Real Madrid’s newest signing is made of sterner stuff and is in contention to play.

And France will need him. Netherlands are also no pushovers, having lost just once in their last eight games, and came from behind to beat Poland in their tournament opener. Brian Brobbey is also in line to feature after missing the Poland game. Follow the game LIVE below with our dedicated match blog.

  • Score prediction: Les Bleus go marching on

21:58 , Alex Young

So, Netherlands were denied a big win over France by a controversial offside decision as an otherwise entertaining Euro 2024 served up its first stalemate.

Both teams have all but confirmed their spots in the knockout stages, needing just a one to be certain.

Poland become the first team eliminated.

21:54 , Alex Young

96min: That’s it! The first stalemate of the tournament!

21:53 , Alex Young

95min: France hack it clear.

21:53 , Alex Young

94min: Netherlands with one final roll of the dice, deep in the France half.

21:50 , Alex Young

91min: Five minutes added on.

21:48 , Alex Young

89min: Heart-in-mouth time for the Dutch as Rabiot bursts through the defence but his cross is nowhere near Coman in the area.

21:46 , Alex Young

87min: Still not clicking in attack for France, just like in the first game.

Rabiot is done in a heap after a tough tackle from Dumfries.

21:44 , Alex Young

85min: The Dutch are getting pushed further and further back.

21:41 , Alex Young

82min: Giroud tries a cheeky flick at the back post - he has previous, to be fair - but only sends the ball out for a goal kick.

21:40 , Alex Young

80min: I would assume Mbappe doesn’t come on if Giroud and Coman have ahead of him.

21:38 , Alex Young

79min: Now Weghorst is on for Depay, the Dutch fans like that sub. Another goalscoring cameo from the Burnley man?

21:35 , Alex Young

76min: Coman and Giroud are on for Dembele and Thuram.

21:33 , Alex Young

73min: Simons is clearly gutted, and now gets subbed off for Wijnaldum.

Geertruida is on for Frimpong and Veerman replaces Schouten.

21:31 , Alex Young

72min: Decision confirmed, no goal.

21:29 , Alex Young

69min: Netherlands think they have the lead but the offside flag is up!

Simons fired home after Depay was denied. Dumfries was in an offside position so the goal looks to be ruled out!

21:27 , Alex Young

68min: France are getting closer and closer! Dembele jinks right and then left and then fires over from the edge of the area.

21:25 , Alex Young

64min: Oh, Griezmann! Kante with a beautiful pass to the forward, who turns and pokes the ball towards the Dutch keeper as he loses his balance!

21:22 , Alex Young

63min: Ooof, Tchouameni glances a header over after a Dembele corner.

Close, but he got underneath it.

21:22 , Alex Young

61min: When is it Mbappe-o-clock?

21:21 , Alex Young

59min: Slow build-up from France almost bears fruit as Rabiot finds Thuram in space to have a pop, who fizzes five yards wide.

21:17 , Alex Young

57min: Rabiot sends a difficult half-volley over the bar. Still missing that final bit of quality at both ends of the pitch.

21:14 , Alex Young

55min: Depay into the wall.

21:14 , Alex Young

54min: Simons vs Dembele again but this time up the other end of the pitch as the young Dutchman wins a free kick about 30 yards out.

21:10 , Alex Young

51min: Superb from Simons to smother Dembele on the edge of the Dutch area after another slicing attack from France.

21:07 , Alex Young

48min: Dembele’s second touch is to send the ball trickling behind for a goal kick. Not a great start.

Second half

21:06 , Alex Young

46min: Back under way!

21:03 , Alex Young

We likely won’t see any changes at the break, but Dembele needs to do more for France.

Mbappe at some point?

20:55 , Alex Young

A frantic start led to a tame finish to the first half.Rabiot, or Griezmann, should have scored, but otherwise this game is still waiting to ignite.

20:49 , Alex Young

47min: There’s the whistle!

20:47 , Alex Young

45min: One minute added on.

20:44 , Alex Young

42min: It’s another long wait for the corner as Griezmann has drinks raining down on him... and then sends the corner into the first man.

20:43 , Alex Young

41min: Griezmann takes, and hits the wall.

20:42 , Alex Young

40min: Another free kick for France, closer this time, after a Van Dijk foul.

20:41 , Alex Young

39min: After a long pause, Griezmann takes and Van Dijk heads away.

20:40 , Alex Young

37min: Thuram vs De Vrij is becoming quite the battle. The defender won the first, the forward now the second to win a free kick on the edge of the area.

20:37 , Alex Young

35min: Frimpong the next Dutch attacker to be swallowed up by this France defence. Saliba, a brick wall.

20:36 , Alex Young

34min: That’s poor from Dembele, who robs the ball off Netherlands high up the pitch but his shimmy to the right and then left fool no-one and his shot is easily blocked.

20:34 , Alex Young

32min: Schouten booked for a foul on Griezmann. Looked a bit soft, that.

20:31 , Alex Young

29min: It’s all gone a bit tetchy. Misplaced passes, slower play. This is what France want, not the Dutch.

20:28 , Alex Young

25min: Rabiot does well to stop another surge forward from Depay, and is then fouled when trying to start a counter.

Both teams perhaps still rushing a tad.

20:23 , Alex Young

21min: The pace has slowed - it wasn’t hard - as the Netherlands try to wrestle back control. It’s been a fascinating start.

20:21 , Alex Young

19min: Comes to nothing.

20:20 , Alex Young

17min: France building some momentum now. That miss has fired them up. Griezmann wins a corner off Dumfries.

20:17 , Alex Young

14min: How. Have. France. Not. SCORED?!

Rabiot has the goal gaping after twisting away from the Dutch defence, but opts to pass to Griezmann instead, who was not expecting it and gets the ball stuck under his feet and falls over!

20:14 , Alex Young

12min: Quite a frantic opening in Leipzig. Very entertaining.

20:12 , Alex Young

10min: Dutch on top, just. They are showing no fear in running at the French defence, who are standing firm for now.

20:11 , Alex Young

8min: Depay hits the deck inside the area under pressure from Saliba, and the referee isn’t having it. Correct decision.

20:09 , Alex Young

6min: Van Dijk has already won four headers over the French attackers.

20:06 , Alex Young

4min: Up the other end, Griezmann tries his luck from distance which wins France a corner.

End to end.

20:05 , Alex Young

3min: Nothing comes from the corner.

20:04 , Alex Young

2min: A fantastic early chance for Netherlands as Frimpong bursts through the defence and forces Maignan into a fingertip save.

20:02 , Alex Young

1min: Here we go!

19:59 , Alex Young

The Dutch anthem is equally impressive.

19:57 , Alex Young

National anthem time. France’s is so jaunty. Top tier.

19:54 , Alex Young

Right, here come the teams!

Rooney on playing with Depay

The pair played together at Manchester United.

Rooney told BBC Sport: "You could never knock his work rate and commitment in training ... but he turned up to a reserve game once driving a Rolls-Royce and wearing a cowboy hat."

19:42 , Alex Young

As we approach kick-off, I’ve got more of a feeling that the Dutch may do something.

We have France to run out fairly comfortable winners in our prediction, but it will surely be much tighter than that - especially now Mbappe is out.

19:37 , Alex Young

Final preparations.

'France won't want to play Mbappe tonight'

19:32 , Alex Young

Julien Laurens on BBC Radio 5 Live: “In an ideal world Kylian Mbappe wouldn't play at all tonight, France still win and top the group and he doesn't play at all against Poland in Dortmund.

“That way he can be fully ready or as ready as possible for the last 16.

“He will want to play but France will not want to take any risks at all with him.”

One change apiece

19:12 , Alex Young

So, Kylian Mbappe will start on the bench after breaking his nose in their opening match versus Austria.

Aurelien Tchouameni comes into the midfield as the only change, Antoine Griezmann takes the captain’s armband.

Wout Weghorst again misses out for the Dutch despite his goalscoring cameo in their opener against Poland.

Jeremie Frimpong replaces Joey Veerman in the only change.

Kylian Mbappe does NOT start. He is on the bench.

What Ronald Koeman has said

18:41 , Alex Young

The will-he-won't-he saga around Kylian Mbappe is far from the mind of Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman.

Mbappe terrorised the Dutch with four goals in two games against them in qualifying. Yet Koeman knows France have enough quality in their squad to cause problems whether Mbappe, who tested out a protective mask on Thursday, starts or not.

"France are such a strong team, that's even if he's not playing," the Dutch coach told reporters on Thursday.

"The substitute will be a great player as well. I can't really focus on this. All we can do is try to influence our team and to prepare ourselves as best as we can.

"Not everything depends on whether Mbappe is there or not. We know that he can be a game changer. He had a big influence on the last two games."

Predicted XIs

18:18 , Alex Young

Predicted Netherlands XI: Verbruggen; Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake; Veerman, Schouten; Malen, Reijnders, Gakpo; Depay

Predicted France XI: Maignan; Kounde, Saliba, Upamecano, Hernandez; Kante, Rabiot; Dembele, Griezmann, Coman; Thuram

Score prediction

18:10 , Alex Young

This will be a real litmus test of both teams’ ability to challenge for the trophy. France looked very good against Austria but only managed to score via an own goal, whereas a wasteful Oranje performance against Poland required late heroics.

France are the favourites in what could be a very open and entertaining game.

France to win, 3-1.

Latest on Kylian Mbappe

18:05 , Alex Young

Didier Deschamps confirmed on Thursday that Mbappe has made positive progress.

“Everything is going well, after the shock we had,” said the manager.

“He was able to take part is some light exercises yesterday and that will be the same this evening. Everything is evolving in the right direction. We'll do all we can to ensure that he'll be available tomorrow.

“Kylian will be wearing a mask. You don't need to know the details of this mask. I think [the media] have enough moles to know where the mask is coming from.”

It sounds like Mbappe will be on the bench tonight.

France team news

18:01 , Alex Young

France will give Kylian Mbappe as much time as possible to prove his fitness ahead of tonight's game.

A custom mask has been created to enable Mbappe, 25, to return to action as soon as possible and he has avoided surgery, meaning the skipper could feature this evening.

Reports initially varied as to when Mbappe will be able to play again with some in France suggesting he could miss a fortnight of action, meaning a return during the knockout stages.

Mbappe donned a mask bearing the colours of the French flag in training on the eve of the game but UEFA rules demand that he wears a mask “of a single colour” which “must not allow the team or manufacturer to be identified” during the match itself.

Deschamps could still call upon Kingsley Coman to start on the left wing against the Dutch, with Randal Kolo Muani and Bradley Barcola alternative options.

Netherlands team news

17:47 , Alex Young

Wout Weghorst is likely to remain a super-sub option for Netherlands despite scoring the late winner, but Xavi Simons could be dropped following his poor display in the Group D opener.

Donyell Malen and Jeremie Frimpong are both options to start in his place on the right wing with Memphis Depay expected to remain up top.

Brian Brobbey should be part of the squad after returning to training.

Good evening and welcome to the Evening Standard’s LIVE coverage of the Euro 2025 group stage clash between Netherlands and France.

All the talk in the build-up has been around Kylian Mbappe’s broken nose, and whether he can - and will - play. He has returned to training, and is in contention.

Netherlands will be happy to not have the spotlight on them, as they have quietly impressed in the months before the tournament and came from behind to beat Poland in their first game.

But, with or without Mbappe, France are a whole different test. Kick-off in Leipzig is at 8pm.
