Netizens express doubt with TVB's excuse for sacking 20 employees

29 Aug – Despite TVB's denial that its firing of 20 employees had anything to do with the Hong Kong anti-extradition bill protest, many are convinced that it was indeed related to the current situation in Hong Kong.

As reported on Mingpao, on 28 August, it was revealed that one of the employees who have been sacked was producer Jacky Lee, who was let go by TVB with three of his team members.

Although the producer is accepting no interviews from the media, it is known that he is a firm supporter of the Hong Kong independence movement, having expressed such sentiment on social media before.

Despite keeping mum about the firing, Jacky recently changed the profile photo of his Facebook account with an image of a black hand, which many suggested to be his way of hinting that his firing was not a simple one.

Jacky is known for variety shows like Kristal Tin's "Pretty Forty" and the "Po Koi Charity Show".

It is noted that TVB CEO Mark Lee previously explained the firing of the 20 employees as a necessity, saying that the company was only doing a restructuring by reducing manpower.

However, following his statement, a post allegedly circulated by the sacked employees went viral online, stating that there is a "white terror" in the company prohibiting staff from speaking out their thoughts. The post has also been shared by Korean actor Kim Eui-sung, who is vocal in his support of the Hong Kong protest.
