SINGAPORE — Muslims in Singapore are set to observe the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan on Tuesday (12 March).

The commencement of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon according to the Islamic lunar calendar, following which religious authorities officially announce its start.

In an announcement on Sunday (10 March), the Mufti of Singapore, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, explained that based on astronomical calculations, the crescent marking the start of Ramadan was unlikely to be visible above Singapore's horizon at sunset on Sunday evening.

Why Muslims in Singapore are marking the start of Ramadan on 12 March

He clarified that the crescent is deemed "too small" and "does not meet the criteria of imkanur rukyah (calculation) agreed upon by members of MABIMS (Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore) countries".

Dr Nazirudin added that Monday marks the 30th day and the completion of the preceding month, Syaaban.

"As such, I am pleased to declare that the first day of fasting for the month of Ramadan falls on Tuesday, 12 March 2024."

He also conveyed his wishes for a blessed Ramadan, saying, "I would like to wish all Muslims in Singapore a blessed month of Ramadan, and let us fulfil our fasts and acts of worship with full appreciation and excellence."

Muis addresses fasting month date confusion

In an earlier Facebook post, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) addressed the confusion surrounding the start of the fasting month stemming from "unverified sources".

The post also clarified, "due to atmospheric and geographical factors, it is very difficult for the new crescent moon (at its early age) to be sighted in Singapore".
