SINGAPORE — Two people were assessed for smoke inhalation and conveyed to Singapore General Hospital after a hawker stall in Newton Food Centre caught fire on Sunday (24 March).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told Yahoo Southeast Asia it was alerted to a fire at 500 Clemenceau Avenue North, the address of Newton Food Centre, at about 9.30pm.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by cooking left unattended inside the affected stall. The fire involved the kitchen exhaust ducting in the stall, and was extinguished with a hose reel, the SCDF said.

Two videos and three photos posted by a Facebook user show thick smoke clouding the food centre. A ringing fire alarm can be heard in the background, as well as, coughing sounds made by visitors.

The second video shows the arrival of a SCDF truck and firefighters.

Smoke can be seen outside the food centre, while passers-by gathered outside the food centre.
