The Great starring Nicholas Hoult and Elle Fanning has been cancelled following its third season.

The historical comedy-drama loosely tells the story of Catherine the Great's (Fanning) rise to power after she marries Peter III (Hoult) and travels to Russia. Across three seasons, we have seen the monarch grapple with a new world of customs and beliefs, try to change the Russian people's view of the monarchy, and the death of her mother at the hands of her own husband.

The latest season of the show, which dropped on May 12, saw the couple focusing on rebuilding their marriage, however, Variety has confirmed that Hulu has cancelled the Emmy-nominated show.

The publication said it is "unclear" what sparked The Great's axing, which earned leading lady Fanning multiple accolades for her performance of Catherine, including two Golden Globe nominations, a SAG award, and a Critic's Choice Award among others.

The third season of the show received an abundance of praise from critics and fans alike, most notably for killing off a number of key characters including Peter, with the show seeing Catherine dealing with her grief for the latter half of the season.

The Great also starred the likes of Phoebe Fox, Charity Wakefield, Adam Godley, Freddie Fox, Gwilym Lee, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan and Bayo Gbadamosi.

Earlier this year, Fanning spoke to Collider about taking risks with her character in the show and what attracted her to the role of Catherine.

"I think I felt safer taking risks, the longer it went on. I knew that it was gonna be something different than I'd ever done before, stepping into the pilot," she said. "When I read the script, I hadn't even seen The Favourite. It hadn't come out yet, so I had nothing really to compare it to, tonally. But I knew we were making something definitely out of the box and different, and I was game for that.

"But I think my capacity to go there grew, through playing the character and learning from the rest of the cast, and from Tony [McNamara, show creator], and getting used to saying his words. I feel like I've gotten more and more comfortable with taking bigger risks."

All three seasons of The Great are available on StarzPlay via Amazon Prime in the UK, and Hulu in the US.
