“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and as soon as I was approached, I said ‘yes’,” he said. “I am not quitting Hollyoaks to take part. My bosses have been really supportive of me doing it. Now it is getting near to going into camp, I am so excited.

“I am obviously not looking forward to eating kangaroo balls, but at the same time, I am looking forward to the trials – that’s the fun part of doing this show. I love the ones where you climb up and jump for a star, or the ones getting submerged in water.”

Nick, who has played Tony since 1995, also spoke of his castmates on the soap, saying they would support him as he ventures into the unknown: “I know they will be rooting for me when they find out – this is going into the unknown,” he said.

“I will miss my home comforts but I want to come away not thinking, ‘What have I missed?’ but a greater appreciation for what you do have in life. I can’t wait to start now. This is so out of my comfort zone and it’s the best show you can do.”

Nick's appearance on I'm a Celeb comes after his co-star Owen Warner (Romeo Nightingale) appeared on the show last year, where he finished second behind Lioness Jill Scott. Can Nick go one better?
