Nicolas Cage's Ex Christina Fulton Speaks Out After Son Weston's Arrest: 'I Was Brutally Assaulted'

Fulton says in a statement that "it is imperative" her son "receives the help he desperately needs" amid his "ongoing mental-health crisis"

Christina Fulton is speaking out amid her son Weston Coppola Cage's felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and subsequent arrest.

Weston, 33, was arrested on Wednesday, July 10, in Los Angeles' 77th division station after turning himself in. He was later released on a $150,000 bond, per police records.

On Thursday, Fulton, 57, released a statement, saying, "On April 28th, 2024, around 5:30 p.m., I received urgent messages from friends of my son, Weston Cage, regarding his deteriorating mental state, urging me to come help."

"When I arrived to offer support and console him, he was already in the midst of a manic rage. Within minutes, I was brutally assaulted and sustained serious injuries," she alleged, adding, "Despite my desperate pleas to the responding police officers to detain him for a mental-health evaluation, the police officers refused my request."

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE on Thursday that the arrest was directly related to the incident on April 28 in which Weston allegedly got into a verbal scuffle with his mother Christina Fulton at her home in Los Angeles, before the incident became physical.

"During the incident, Cage punched two victims multiple times, causing injury. LAPD responded, and after meeting with all parties, a police report was completed," police said.

According to the LAPD, the case was presented to the district attorney's office on May 10. The DA filed two counts of assault with a deadly weapon against Weston on June 26, with an arrest warrant issued sometime after.

"As a mother, I am deeply saddened and concerned about Weston’s ongoing mental-health crisis," Fulton said in her Thursday statement. "It is imperative that he receives the help he desperately needs."

A rep for Weston has not responded to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Back in May, the LAPD confirmed to PEOPLE that "a battery report was taken" as a result of the alleged April 28 incident, while Fulton disputed reports she and her son argued before the alleged scuffle.

Weston, who has battled substance abuse in the past, was arrested for a DUI and a hit and run in Los Angeles in 2017. He opened up about his sobriety journey to PEOPLE two years earlier, saying, "It got to the point where people thought I was digging my grave."

The dad of four also shared that the birth of his first son helped him focus on recovery.

"Having the combination of [now-ex] Danielle and Lucian and my father in my life, just that trinity right there, basically is going to keep me here," he said.

Weston is a musician and actor who has appeared in several of dad Nicolas Cage's films. He made his big-screen debut in 2005's Lord of War and has acted in several movies in the years since, most recently 2024's The Night They Came Home.
