So You Think You Can Dance lead judge Nigel Lythgoe has departed the show in light of sexual assault claims.

"I have informed the producers of So You Think You Can Dance of my decision to step back from participating in this year's series," he announced in a statement (via Deadline).

"I did so with a heavy heart but entirely voluntarily because this great program has always been about dance and dancers, and that's where its focus needs to remain. In the meantime, I am dedicating myself to clearing my name and restoring my reputation."

19 Entertainment, Dick Clark Productions, and Fox jointly confirmed the upcoming season of the US reality show will go ahead, "although without Nigel Lythgoe to ensure the show remains committed to the contestants, who have worked incredibly hard for the opportunity to compete on our stage".

"No decision has been made as to a replacement judge for this season, which will premiere on Fox on Monday, March 4," they added.

The star is currently under investigation by 19 Entertainment.

At the end of 2023, Lythgoe's former So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol colleague Paula Abdul, who judged on the former panel for seven years until 2009, sued him in Los Angeles over "indecent conduct" throughout their time working together.

Part of the lawsuit reads: "For years, Abdul has remained silent about the sexual assaults and harassment she experienced on account of Lythgoe. Lythgoe knew and was aware that his treatment of Abdul was inappropriate and even criminal. Indeed at one point Lythgoe called Abdul and taunted her that they should celebrate because it had been 'seven years and the statute of limitations had run'.

"Lythgoe clearly knew that his assaults of Abdul were not just wrong but that he held the power to keep her silent," with subsequent references to alleged compensation discrimination, bullying, taunting and humiliation.

A second lawsuit has been filed against Lythgoe from two contestants on reality show All American Girl pertaining to alleged sexual assault and harassment.
