No exams for Primary 3 and 4 students as face-to-face lessons to resume in phases
SINGAPORE — Year-end examinations for Primary 3 and 4 students will be cancelled, as the Ministry of Education (MOE) begins to progressively bring P1 to P6 students back to school for face-to-face lessons from Monday (11 October).
The ministry said in a media release on Thursday that the P3 and P4 exams are cancelled to allow more time for curriculum recovery due to disruptions brought about by COVID-19.
It added that schools will be able to draw a range of assessments conducted throughout the year to report students’ learning progress and provide feedback, as well as make recommendations on students’ subject combination where necessary.
Meanwhile, year-end examinations for P5 students will still proceed under strict safe management measures (SMMs). MOE said that this allows students and parents to better understand the students' learning progress prior to taking the Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) next year.
P1 and P2 students do not have year-end examinations.
Return to school after Home-Based Learning
From next week, MOE will begin to phase the return of students in primary schools and Special Education schools from their Home-Based Learning (HBL), which was implemented to reduce the possible disruption to the cohort taking the PSLE:
P3 to P6 students will return from Monday;
P1 and P2 students to continue with HBL on Monday and Tuesday, and return to school for face-to-face lessons only from Wednesday;
Special Education schools will be provided with more details on the phased return of students.
Parents of P1 to P5 students are to do an Antigen Rapid Test (ART) swab on their children at home on either Friday or Saturday, prior to returning to school and report the results via a link that will be sent to them.
Lessons for students aged 12 and below at tuition and enrichment centres may resume face-to-face from Monday, with strict SMMs in place. However, MOE strongly encourages centres to continue conducting these classes online as much as possible.
Face-to-face classes for students aged 12 and below in private education institutions (PEIs) may also resume from Monday. PEIs with similar student profiles and that conduct similar activities to schools are strongly advised to take reference from measures for schools, and adopt them where possible.
Co-curricular activities and other after-school activities will continue to be suspended for all levels, including secondary schools, junior colleges and Millennia Institute.
School holiday after PSLE marking exercise
The 2021 PSLE marking exercise will be conducted over four days, from 18 to 21 October. Primary school students will not be required to report to school during this period of marking, and there will be no HBL conducted.
The day after the marking exercise, 22 October, will be a school holiday for primary schools. All primary school students will return to school from 25 October (Monday).
