No offence in the PAP flyer distribution case: police

Singapore police have found "no offence" in the distribution of flyers by People's Action Party (PAP) activists encouraging residents in Aljunied, Hougang and Punggol East to question the running of their town council under the opposition Workers' Party.

“The Police has consulted Attorney-General Chambers (AGC) on the report lodged regarding the distribution of flyers. It has been determined that there is no offence disclosed in this case," the police said in a statement.

The statement comes after some bloggers wondered about the legality of the PAP activists' distribution of the flyers given that members of the Singapore Democratic Party went to jail for illegal assembly, as they did not have a permit when they distributed flyers of a political nature in 2008.

The police statement did not mention whether the PAP activists had a permit, or whether the activists would not have needed one to distribute the flyers that were about activities involving another political party.

The management of the Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol-East Town Council was fiercely debated in Parliament last month after the Auditor-General found lapses in the council's financial statements.

A motion criticising the management of AHPETC was filed by the government and passed with the support of the Workers' Party itself.

After the debate, however, Yahoo Singapore talked to some residents in the opposition-run wards and found that majority were little moved by the debate.
