No One Will Save You spoilers ahead.

Brian Duffield, director of home-invasion sci-fi horror No One Will Save You, has explained whether the film's oddly idyllic ending is reality or not.

The film stars Kaitlyn Dever as the reclusive Brynn, who is grieving the loss of her mother and shunned by her entire town due to a past, unknown event; as a result, she lives a solitary life, until she is forced to fend off an alien invasion on Earth.

The invasion ends with most of Brynn's town possessed by the hostile extra-terrestrials – except her. And, strangely enough, her neighbours are friendlier towards her than ever before.

In an interview with Inverse, Duffield has given his take on whether the ending is real, or a hallucination.

"For Brynn, it's not a delusion or anything," he revealed. "I love Brynn. I love her as a character and what she goes through, and I don't have the heart to be a douchebag, and she gets her kicked so hard in the movie that I wanted our girl to be okay."

Continuing, Duffield explained that, to him, the ending represents the human ability to heal after trauma.

"Thematically [that's] what the movie is about for me, is about how these life-altering things happen, and then you have to rebuild and figure it out."

He went on to confirm that although the ending is open to interpretation, Brynn got a "genuine experience" of a happy ending in his eyes.

"I know some people have been like, ‘Oh, is she dead or dreaming,’ or whatever. I think there's material there to suggest everything, but I think for Brynn as a character, it's a genuine experience that she's having."

"You can interpret it [as a dream,] especially because of where she is beforehand, but I don't know how much I believe you can heal in a dream. I like bleak horror endings, but I like Brynn more than those."

Duffield concluded that for him, Brynn is in a "good place" in the ending of the film.

The film has been commended for its more unique aspects, including the fact that there's only one line of dialogue over the full run-time.

No One Will Save You is available to watch now on Disney+ in the UK and on Hulu in the US.
