Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal – LIVE!

Arsenal have plenty of work to do if they are to avoid Manchester City being confirmed as Premier League champions, with Nottingham Forest 1-0 up at half-time at the City Ground. Pep Guardiola’s side look almost certain to complete the job this weekend anyway, but Taiwo Awoniyi’s first-half strike will seal it for them should Forest hang on to secure all three points.

A response to last week’s defeat to Brighton was expected for Arsenal, but they have done very little with the more than 80% possession they have had and it looks like being a tame finish to what has been a superb season.

Steve Cooper’s side are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table and have built their survival bid on some impressive home form. They are 45 minutes away from securing Premier League safety. Follow the action LIVE with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog! Simon Collings will be providing expert analysis from the ground!

Mikel Arteta accepts ‘responsibility’ as Arsenal title challenge ends with a whimper

20:28 , Jonathan Gorrie

Mkel Arteta admits Arsenal could have played Nottingham Forest for “three hours” and not have found a way through.

Taiwo Awoniyi scored the only goal of the game as the Gunners fell to defeat and duly handed the Premier League title over to Manchester City.

Manchester City crowned Premier League champions

Manchester City have been crowned Premier League champions for the third consecutive season.

Pep Guardiola’s side are not in action until they host Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday but Arsenal’s loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening has handed them the title.

City twice beat the Gunners while chasing down what looked a huge lead after the World Cup and are on course for a historic treble.

Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions after Arsenal were beaten 1-0 at Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners had plenty of possession during the game, but they created nothing with it and Forest scored with their first of just two shots on target.

Taiwo Awoniyi was put through by Morgan Gibbs-White in the 19th minute and his shot found the bottom corner after Gabriel’s tackle deflected the ball onto his foot.

The defeat means the title race is officially over, while Forest have also guaranteed they will be playing in the Premier League next season.

The title race is officially over and, in the end, Arsenal went down without throwing a punch.

Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 victory over the Gunners means Manchester City are Premier League champions - and with three games to spare.

It is their fifth title in the past six seasons and completes a remarkable late charge from them. Arsenal were eight points clear of City at the start of April.

Since then, though, Mikel Arteta’s side have taken nine points from a possible 24 and their season has ended with a whimper.

This was an especially sorry finish here at the City Ground. Arsenal had over 80 per cent possession, but they did nothing with it. Instead, they gifted Forest the only goal of the game as Taiwo Awoniyi struck and the hosts kept their first clean sheet since February 5.

The title race is now officially over, with Man City champions. Lacklustre performance from Arsenal, who never created anything against Forest.

Huge win for the hosts, who have guaranteed Premier League football next season.

Start the party!

FT: Nottingham Forest 1-0 Arsenal

19:32 , Matt Verri

FOREST STAY UP! AND CITY ARE CHAMPIONS!

A massive result at the top and bottom of the Premier League. Arsenal have made a lot of people happy with that awful display.

Brilliant for Forest, who will be in the top-flight next season.

19:28 , Matt Verri

90+6 mins: Get the champagne ready in Manchester...

And Nottingham for that matter!

19:26 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: Cooper a bag of nerves on the touchline.

That’s just the situation though, what’s going on in front of him hasn’t given him any reason to be worried.

Forest on the verge!

19:22 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Seven minutes added on.

Feels like it’s a few days short of what Arsenal need...

19:21 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Yates just falls over on the edge of his box, gets the decision. Hmmm. Not sure what the referee has seen there.

Full party mode now at the City Ground. The job is almost done.

19:19 , Matt Verri

86 mins: This is very much one to file under ‘could have been there all day and not scored’.

Arsenal unable to even get shots away, let alone score. So impressive from Forest at the back, they’ve given the Gunners nothing.

Saka down in the box... referee doesn’t even look at him.

19:17 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Probably about ten minutes, including stoppage-time, to go.

Fans in Nottingham and Manchester wanting this to end immediately. To be honest I imagine those in north London are fairly keen to move on from this match, it’s been miserable.

19:13 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Niakhate taking his time over a long-throw, as you’d expect.

Worrall looks to flick it on, cleared away and hits the referee. Both sets of players annoyed as the whistle goes.

19:09 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Can’t even think of a decent chance Arsenal have had this evening. Been a terrible performance, for all Forest have defended well.

And now Gabriel squares up to Gibbs-White, earning himself a booking. Brazilian is running very hot.

19:06 , Matt Verri

73 mins: A lot of arm waving from the Arsenal players, none of them seem to be happy with where their team-mates are.

Partey through the lines to Nketiah, he’s forced to turn back though. Odegaard clips it into the box, Aurier throws himself at the ball and heads it away.

19:02 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Trossard off, he hasn’t been able to get into the match at all.

Vieira on in his place, Arteta as he has been in recent weeks reluctant to turn to Smith Rowe even when his side are chasing a match.

18:59 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Big chance to make it 2-0!

Partey with a pass that White can’t control, and Gibbs-White is there to run through on goal. Tight angle, fired into the side netting.

18:55 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Kiwior and Xhaka off, Tierney and Nketiah on. Those changes could easily have come at half-time.

Still the best part of half an hour for the Gunners to turn this around. Still not looking likely though.

18:53 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Navas finally called into action, as Saka gets in down the right. Fires the shot at goal, goalkeeper parries it away. Arsenal corner.

It will be Saka to take this, flicked on at the near post and headed out to Jorginho, who has a deflected shot fly wide.

18:49 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Still no sign of any Arsenal changes. Tierney, Smith Rowe and Nketiah among those waiting in reserve, surely won’t be long.

White gives away a cheap free-kick, huge roar from the stands. Forest getting closer and closer to safety.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

18:47 , Matt Verri

As this game passes everyone by, including Arsenal, just wondering how many dog puns will grace the back pages tomorrow.

‘Arsenal are all bark, no bite’, etc...

18:46 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Jesus throws himself to the ground in the box, claiming he’s been pulled back.

There was a bit of contact there, referee not interested though and he instead shows Jesus the yellow card for dissent.

18:45 , Matt Verri

53 mins: How long until Navas gets booked for time-wasting?

Not sure he needs to, the way his side are defending in front of him, but the Forest goalkeeper already showing signs that he is keen to tick the seconds away.

18:42 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Gibbs-White pounces on a loose pass, wins a throw-in for his side.

Early signs are that Arsenal are struggling just as much, and Forest are now looking slightly better on the ball when they get their moments.

18:39 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Awoniyi challenging with Jorginho, but Arsenal win the ball back.

Referee blows the whistle though, he’s pulled it back for a free-kick to Forest, Gabriel dragging Awoniyi back. Sun is right in Ramsdale’s eyes this half, and this is within shooting range.

Gibbs-White clips it in instead, nodded back across goal... falls for Felipe and deflects wide! Arsenal hanging on.

Back underway!

18:37 , Matt Verri

We are eventually up and running again!

Simon Collings at the City Ground

18:36 , Matt Verri

Arsenal back out a good two minutes early for the second-half...

18:34 , Matt Verri

Partey, White and Jorginho all completed more passes individually in the opening 45 minutes than Forest managed as a team.

That won’t bother Cooper one bit though - his side are on the verge of securing their place in the Premier League next season.

Big goal at both ends of the table!

18:27 , Matt Verri

Simon Collings at the City Ground

18:23 , Matt Verri

Arsenal with over 80 per cent possession, but done nothing with it. Forest had one shot on target, one goal, as they pounced on a loose pass by Odegaard.

All so tight and narrow from Arsenal, with Forest working well being deep and compact.

There is half-time!

Forest on course to stay in the Premier League, Arsenal on track to officially hand the title to Manchester City.

Much, much more needed from the Gunners.

18:19 , Matt Verri

45+3 mins: More Arsenal passing, though it’s just side-to-side.

Whistles from the home fans, they want the half-time whistle. They’re a minute away from getting it...

18:17 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Four minutes added on.

Not sure that suits Arsenal really, they need to get in and come up with something different. Tierney for Kiwior feels a very obvious change.

18:14 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Partey gets to the byline, digs a cross out but Forest, as ever, have enough bodies back.

Gunners have to try and stretch the play more than this. The left-wing is non-existent, and it’s all far too narrow on the opposite flank.

18:12 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Forest win a throw-in deep in Arsenal territory, almost celebrated like a goal.

The hosts have barely been in the Gunners’ half since taking the lead, will want to make more of the rare moments when they do have the ball.

This will be launched into the box... Ramsdale claims.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

18:11 , Matt Verri

Interesting moment there as Ramsdale gestures to Tierney, who is warming up.

The goalkeeper stretched his arms out wide. He is right, Arsenal need more width, too easy for Forest be compact at the moment.

18:09 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Mangala runs into Partey, falls over and gets a free-kick. Referee not interested initially but then the whistle goes.

Man City are on track to become Premier League champions tonight as it stands, Arsenal are struggling. A lot.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

18:07 , Matt Verri

This is a bit like watching Arsenal under Wenger. Forest so deep and compact, with Arsenal trying to find a pass in the tightest of spaces.

18:06 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Well over 80% of the ball for Arsenal so far.

They look dangerous when Jesus is able to turn with it on the edge of the box, but apart from that it’s comfortable for Forest. So far, so good.

18:02 , Matt Verri

31 mins: White stands with his foot on the ball on the halfway line for about ten seconds. Nobody has any interest in closing him down.

Jorginho meanwhile is waving his hands around and conducting traffic in midfield, he wants Saka to keep the width.

Fair to say this isn’t going very well for the Gunners...

17:59 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Clever corner routine from Arsenal, Odegaard plays it to the edge of the area and Trossard has plenty of space. Scuffs the effort wide.

Forest continue to get every player back behind the ball, they’re looking really solid. Jesus tries his luck from distance, ballooned over the bar.

17:56 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Long ball forward, Awoniyi challenges Gabriel and the Forest man is immediately booked. Referee didn’t waste any time there. Caught Gabriel with a flailing arm, slightly harsh that.

Arsenal’s left wing doesn’t really exist with this set-up. Everything coming down the right.

17:53 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Very scrappy finish, Gabriel pretty much kicked it off Awoniyi as he slid in and it’s bobbled past Ramsdale and into the back of the net.

Atmosphere has gone up another notch now, this is going to be a real test for Arsenal.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

17:52 , Matt Verri

So sloppy from Arsenal there as they gift Forest the chance to take the lead. Intriguing to see if their heads drop now.

GOAL! Nottingham Forest 1-0 Arsenal | Taiwo Awoniyi 19'

17:51 , Matt Verri

RUTHLESS!

Odegaard gives the ball with a terrible pass and Forest are away. Gibbs-White drives forward, slides the pass through to Awoniyi and he beats Ramsdale to give Forest the deal.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

17:49 , Matt Verri

Some quirky set-piece routines from Arsenal so far, perhaps a sign they’re experimenting with the title all but gone.

Nico Jover, their set-piece coach, barking out orders at every corner.

17:47 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Well Niakhate is back up and fine to continue, looks to be moving fine.

Forest barely having a touch of the ball now, but they’re relatively comfortable in their shape. Another Arsenal corner coming up, after Trossard drifts out to the right and knocks the ball off the defender.

17:45 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Niakhate is down, looks to be in a lot of pain. Odegaard lost his balance, full weight fell on the Forest defender’s ankle.

Boly is warming up on the touchline for Forest, he may well be called upon here. Arsenal will have a corner when we get back up and running, Jesus having a shot blocked behind.

17:43 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Long spell of possession, Odegaard slides it through to Trossard and he plays Jesus in.

Angle is tight, the Brazilian just about beats Navas to the ball but the shot is smothered and Forest can slow things down again. Arsenal very much in control now.

17:41 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Match starting to settle into more of the expected pattern.

Forest sitting back deep in their shape, Arsenal having plenty of the ball in defence and midfield. As most teams have found here this season though, Forest are a really tough side to break down.

17:39 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Gibbs-White flying down the right, beats Kiwior for pace and wins a corner for his side. Lodi takes... awful.

Arsenal haven’t really got going yet, don’t think Trossard or Saka have had a kick.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

17:37 , Matt Verri

It looks like Arteta has basically flipped the build-up.

So Partey tucking in from right-back to do Zinchenko role. Kiwior then makes it a back-three, like White would normally do.

17:36 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Arsenal having to deal with plenty of long throws in the opening minutes. Ball being flung into he box.

Bit of a mess, it bobbles around before eventually the whistle goes. Jesus challenging for a header and he wins a free-kick. Bright start this from the hosts.

17:34 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Forest very keen to lump balls down their left, with Partey at right-back. They’ll fancy their chances of having some success down that flank.

Frantic pace to the match early on, Partey having to slide in to stop a Forest break.

Simon Collings at the City Ground

17:32 , Matt Verri

After all that - it’s Partey right-back. White and Gabriel centre-backs. Kiwior left-back.

KICK-OFF

17:31 , Matt Verri

Brilliant atmosphere at the City Ground. We’re up and running!

17:28 , Matt Verri

Players are out onto the pitch, glorious evening in Nottingham.

Three points and Forest will have officially secured their Premier League survival. Some prize...

Simon Collings at the City Ground

17:25 , Matt Verri

The City Ground is LOUD. Fans, most likely, been on the beers all day in the May sunshine. Stands quite literally bouncing.

Arteta expecting response

17:17 , Matt Verri

Arteta as open as ever when discussing his team selection: “We shall see.”

The Arsenal boss says he’s confident his side have recovered from the disappointment of last week, as they look to extend the title race by at least one more day.

We will soon see if that’s true!

Simon Collings at the City Ground

17:12 , Matt Verri

Interesting watching Arsenal warm up. Looks like Xhaka is left-back.

Also, it seems like it could be 4-2-3-1, with Jorginho and Partey sitting and Odegaard ahead of them as a No10.

Steve Cooper’s pre-match thoughts

17:08 , Matt Verri

“I expect to come up against a team that has quite rightly been at the top of the Premier League for most of the season. We’re coming up against a top, top team.

“If you put all the context to our situation and theirs to one side, we know we have to be at our very best. That’s the bare minimum.”

Forest well-placed to stay up.

17:01 , Matt Verri

Wolves have been pegged back late on against Everton in one of the 3pm kick-offs, with the Toffees equalising in the 99th minute!

As it stands, Steve Cooper’s side sit three points clear of the relegation zone in 16th, with a trip to Crystal Palace to come on the final day of the season.

A point this evening and you’d feel the job is pretty much done.

Arteta reveals 122 text messages

16:55 , Matt Verri

How did Mikel Arteta deal with last week’s heavy defeat to Brighton? Messages of support certainly helped him.

“I healed myself first for 24 hours, which I needed because it was painful,” the Arsenal boss said.

“And then live with the moment, live with the situation and try to change it straightaway, and give them (the players) all the support and help that they need to be better, to learn from it and to face tomorrow a challenge and opportunity again to put something right.

“Sometimes you go in bed and just cover in bed for 12 hours and don’t speak to anybody. Sometimes you need your wife and kids around you, your dog, and your family.

“In the three years I have been at the club, I have never had that many text messages after the game. It was incredible. I think it was 122 messages I had – all talking about what we have done. ‘Don’t lose perspective on what you guys have done’.

“That helps because it comes from friends, a lot of colleagues, coaches as well, a lot of people at the club, and sometimes that helps you as well and sometimes you need that.”

Xhaka at left-back

16:39 , Matt Verri

No real surprise that Cooper has gone with the same side that earned a point at Stamford Bridge last weekend. Awoniyi once again leading the line, and he’s a man very much in form.

For Arsenal, Xhaka starts at left-back as Tierney drops to the bench, with Partey and Jorginho starting alongside each other in midfield for the first time. Trossard in for the injured Martinelli.

Big summer ahead

16:18 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta has detailed his plan to take Arsenal to the “next level” in this summer’s transfer window.

The Gunners are preparing a budget of £200million to once again take the Premier League title fight to Manchester City, as well as competing in the Champions League after six years away.

Standard Sport understand Declan Rice is their top target while Brighton’s Moises Caicedo is also of interest, with Granit Xhaka set to depart to clear space for Arteta’s midfield revamp.

Arteta told reporters ahead of facing Nottingham Forest that this coming window will be “crucial” for the club’s ambitions.

“To go to the next level is going to be a crucial summer for us,” he said. “That is for sure. First of all to make sure that we maintain everything that we have at the club right now.

“That we maintain expectations, that we maintain enthusiasm and energy that is around the place and we have a proper preparation to fulfil the objectives and the challenges that we will have next season.”

Surprise new signing

16:02 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta has added a dog to Arsenal’s training ground in a bid to lift morale.

The chocolate Labrador, called Win, has been a regular at London Colney since last month and has proved popular with players. Her owner is a member of staff, who she lives with, but she comes in a few times a week and roams the training ground.

“We always talk about family,” said Arteta. “And being connected.

“In my opinion a big family like we are at the club, which I feel we are a family, you need a dog to represent that family.

“I think there are still things at the club that can be done to connect with people, to be more caring with people, to show love, and I found this dog that in my opinion was the perfect representative of who we are right now.

“You come in the building like this and she is coming and giving all the love and suddenly you just feel the energy, the players on the floor just hugging her, it is just beautiful to watch.”

Bad memories for Arsenal

15:54 , Matt Verri

Arsenal back at the City Ground for the first time since they crashed out of the FA Cup last season.

The Gunners were dreadful that day, and it’s safe to say Mikel Arteta was not impressed with what he saw from his side. Here’s a look at his post-match team talk after that defeat.

Much better needed today!

Guardiola wants Arsenal win...

15:44 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola has suggested he would prefer Arsenal to beat Nottingham Forest and leave Manchester City to chance to seal the Premier League title on the pitch.

City are on an 11-match winning run in the Premier League and, after the Gunners’ defeat to Brighton last weekend, have a four-point advantage at the top of the table with a game in hand.

The title will be officially heading to Manchester should Arsenal lose to Forest here, though Guardiola’s side will be confirmed as champions if they beat Chelsea tomorrow, regardless of what happens elsewhere.

Asked if he will be watching the Arsenal match, the City boss revealed that he wants his players to get the opportunity to complete the job themselves in front of their home fans at the Etihad.

“I don’t think so, we have a game the day after,” Guardiola said.

“In my mind, I would like to think we have to win to be champions, celebrating with our people in the stadium would be the best.”

Standard Sport prediction

15:29 , Matt Verri

Arsenal proved with their wins over Chelsea and Newcastle that they can recover from blows and should have enough to beat Forest, even despite their famous home support.

Arsenal to win 3-1.

Arsenal team news

15:22 , Matt Verri

A double injury blow was confirmed by Mikel Arteta ahead of this evening’s clash.

Gabriel Martinelli (ankle) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (calf) will miss the rest of the campaign, having already lost William Saliba, Mohamed Elneny and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

In their absence, Jakub Kiwior, Leandro Trossard and Kieran Tierney are all primed to come into the side.

“[Martinelli and Zinchenko] are both out for the rest of the season,” said Arteta.

“Gabi is a pretty nasty injury, we need to assess in the next week how long he’ll be out for, but it will be at least weeks.

“With Alex it’s a calf issue and he won’t be available to play the next two games.”

Predicted Arsenal XI: Ramsdale; White, Saliba, Kiwior, Tierney; Odegaard, Jorginho, Vieira; Saka, Jesus, Trossard (4-3-3)
