Arsenal have plenty of work to do if they are to avoid Manchester City being confirmed as Premier League champions, with Nottingham Forest 1-0 up at half-time at the City Ground. Manchester City have been crowned Premier League champions for the third consecutive season.

Pep Guardiola’s side are not in action until they host Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday but Arsenal’s loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening has handed them the title.

City twice beat the Gunners while chasing down what looked a huge lead after the World Cup and are on course for a historic treble.

Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions after Arsenal were beaten 1-0 at Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners had plenty of possession during the game, but they created nothing with it and Forest scored with their first of just two shots on target.

Taiwo Awoniyi was put through by Morgan Gibbs-White in the 19th minute and his shot found the bottom corner after Gabriel’s tackle deflected the ball onto his foot.

The defeat means the title race is officially over, while Forest have also guaranteed they will be playing in the Premier League next season.

The title race is officially over and, in the end, Arsenal went down without throwing a punch.

Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 victory over the Gunners means Manchester City are Premier League champions - and with three games to spare.

It is their fifth title in the past six seasons and completes a remarkable late charge from them. Arsenal were eight points clear of City at the start of April.

Since then, though, Mikel Arteta’s side have taken nine points from a possible 24 and their season has ended with a whimper.

This was an especially sorry finish here at the City Ground. Arsenal had over 80 per cent possession, but they did nothing with it. Instead, they gifted Forest the only goal of the game as Taiwo Awoniyi struck and the hosts kept their first clean sheet since February 5.

“I healed myself first for 24 hours, which I needed because it was painful,” the Arsenal boss said.

“And then live with the moment, live with the situation and try to change it straightaway, and give them (the players) all the support and help that they need to be better, to learn from it and to face tomorrow a challenge and opportunity again to put something right.

“Sometimes you go in bed and just cover in bed for 12 hours and don’t speak to anybody. Sometimes you need your wife and kids around you, your dog, and your family.

The Gunners are preparing a budget of £200million to once again take the Premier League title fight to Manchester City, as well as competing in the Champions League after six years away.

Mikel Arteta has added a dog to Arsenal’s training ground in a bid to lift morale.

The chocolate Labrador, called Win, has been a regular at London Colney since last month and has proved popular with players. Her owner is a member of staff, who she lives with, but she comes in a few times a week and roams the training ground.

“We always talk about family,” said Arteta. “And being connected.

“In my opinion a big family like we are at the club, which I feel we are a family, you need a dog to represent that family.

“I think there are still things at the club that can be done to connect with people, to be more caring with people, to show love, and I found this dog that in my opinion was the perfect representative of who we are right now.

“You come in the building like this and she is coming and giving all the love and suddenly you just feel the energy, the players on the floor just hugging her, it is just beautiful to watch.”

Pep Guardiola has suggested he would prefer Arsenal to beat Nottingham Forest and leave Manchester City to chance to seal the Premier League title on the pitch.

City are on an 11-match winning run in the Premier League and, after the Gunners’ defeat to Brighton last weekend, have a four-point advantage at the top of the table with a game in hand.

The title will be officially heading to Manchester should Arsenal lose to Forest here, though Guardiola’s side will be confirmed as champions if they beat Chelsea tomorrow, regardless of what happens elsewhere.
