Nursery rated inadequate in first Ofsted inspection

Inspectors visiting a Northamptonshire nursery for the first time have rated it "inadequate" in all areas.

An Ofsted report found Ashbourne Day Nursery in Pineham Village, near Northampton, had a "chaotic" environment and poor staff supervision of children.

The watchdog has instructed the nursery to rectify safety and welfare concerns raised by the report.

The nursery said it was "deeply disappointed" by the rating and that a comprehensive action plan is under way in response.

In the report, published on Monday, inspectors criticised the nursery for ineffective safeguarding, a poorly planned curriculum and weaknesses with staff supervision.

The inspection took place on 21 May and managers were given a month to resolve a host of areas under a Welfare Requirements Notice.

The report said “staff sit with children at activities, but rarely engage with them" and "do not know how to manage children’s behaviour appropriately, which leads to a chaotic and loud play environment".

It said: "Children squabble over toys and equipment and push each other over when they do not get what they want.

“Children are not supported to learn how to behave well or understand how their behaviour impacts on others."

However, the report added that "staff are kind" and children are "generally happy to attend and appear to enjoy their time in the setting".

Erika Veglio, regional manager of Ashbourne Day Nurseries, said: “We are deeply disappointed by the recent Ofsted rating, as it does not reflect the high standards of Ashbourne Day Nurseries.

“Our primary focus remains on the well-being and development of the children. We are dedicated to upholding our commitment to quality care and education and look forward to welcoming Ofsted back within the next six months.”

Ashbourne Day Nurseries operate more than 20 sites and its Pineham location - acquired in 2022 - was formally known Blossom Tree Day Nursery.
