Olivia Rodrigo Accidentally Followed Her Ex on Social Media When ‘Stalking’ Him: ‘I Have a Finsta Now’
The singer told the story of her Instagram mishap during an appearance on Thursday's 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon'
Olivia Rodrigo has lived every nosey ex's nightmare!
The three-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter appeared on Thursday's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where she revealed she once made a social media snafu by following her ex-boyfriend on Instagram when checking up on his page.
“I had this very embarrassing encounter once where I was stalking my ex as one does. Sue me, sorry,” Rodrigo, 20, said. “And I accidentally followed him 'cause I was stalking him!"
Her mishap became all the more noticeable as Rodrigo doesn't follow anyone on Instagram, a decision she said she made a long time ago to help her stay off social media. "I was just following one person so it was super obvious that I was following him," she said.
The “Drivers License” singer didn't notice at first, but her friend sure did, running into her room and saying, “Did you mean to follow him? Unfollow him!”
But things went from bad to worse when Rodrigo rushed to hit unfollow and her phone died the second she opened the Instagram app.
“I couldn’t find a charger so I was just following my ex for a while,” the star recalled, joking, “People were like, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s hacked!’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, you guys be safe! Get your two-factor authentication, you guys.’ "
Rodrigo won't be making that again. She told Fallon, 49, that she has a secret Instagram account now (known colloquially as "a Finsta") to help protect her from that exact sort of thing. She noted the account allows you to "just lurk and be curious.”

The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star was on The Tonight Show to promote her upcoming musical appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend, alongside actor Adam Driver. She'll be performing songs off her hit sophomore alum, Guts.
Last month, Rodrigo opened up about how feels depressed when she’s not writing songs. "I just feel like myself when I’m writing," she told Variety, "If I don’t do it, I get depressed. I’m just writing songs to process what’s going on, whether in my personal life or in my perception of the world."
