1 Marine killed, 14 injured in vehicle rollover in California
One Marine died Tuesday in a tactical vehicle rollover at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., the service revealed Wednesday.
The rollover of the Amphibious Combat Vehicle occurred around 6 p.m. local time during a training exercise, with 14 other Marines also in the vehicle at the time of the accident, according to a Marine Corps statement.
The 14, who have not been named, were taken to local hospitals and Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton for evaluation and treatment, the release states.
The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, in accordance with Department of Defense policy.
The incident is under investigation, the service said.
Vehicle rollovers involving service members have happened somewhat frequently over the past several years and are a leading cause of death within the military.
Officials blame improper training and sleep deprivation for many of the accidents, as well as soldiers not wearing seatbelts, as they aren’t included in the back of certain vehicles.
The latest similar incident was Oct. 2 in Alaska, where two soldiers with the 11th Airborne Division were killed and 12 others were injured when their Light Medium Tactical Vehicle flipped while traveling with a convoy in the Yukon Training Area.
In another accident in July, eight soldiers with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment were injured in a vehicle rollover in Bavaria, Germany, during training.
Earlier in May, South Carolina National Guardsmen Spc. Jayson Haven died in a Humvee rollover accident at Camp Buehring, Kuwait.
And in January 2022, two Marines died and 17 others were injured after a military vehicle crashed near Camp Lejeune, N.C.
