The One Show viewers were left cringing during Tuesday's episode (May 30) as magicians Penn and Teller attempted to do a trick backstage.

The duo invited presenters Angellica and Roman Kemp to take part in a card trick during their segment, but things started going downhill when they let Angellica take the reins as they tucked into some burgers.

The magicians continued to eat their food while giving directions to a visibly confused Angellica, instructing her to pick a card out of the deck, memorise it and then reshuffle the cards.

The card that Angellica had chosen would have been revealed if she had counted down to 14 in the deck after reshuffling, as instructed by a food-covered Teller.

But amid the chaos, she ended up miscounting and picking the wrong card out of the deck not once, but twice.

"You counted too far down and missed it!" Roman teased in an attempt to ease the awkwardness, while Angellica burst into laughter.

Viewers weren't too impressed by the trick, with one tweeting: "Not quite sure what I just witnessed on live national TV with Penn and Teller..," while another commented: "When live TV goes wrong," alongside some laughing face emojis.

The magical duo had better TV luck last year when they made a guest appearance on The Big Bang Theory spinoff show Young Sheldon, in which they played dermatological duo Acne and Pus.

"When we landed on Penn, he seemed so perfect, and it's hard not to think of Teller when you think of Penn," Young Sheldon co-creator Steve Molaro said at the time.

"Once Penn agreed to do it, we circled around to say, 'How would you guys feel about doing it together, as Acne and Pus?' They were very into it, and just a delight to work with from beginning to end."

The One Show airs on BBC One.
