Two cloth caps worn by legendary 'Only Fools and Horses' character Del Boy have sold for more than £10,000 at auction.

Sir David Jason brought the market trader character to life in the BBC sitcom, and the 83-year-old star has now offloaded two of his caps over the weekend, but he was left shocked when one was bought for £7,600, and another for £3,000.

Upon seeing one of the hats go for £7,600 at a two-day Only Fools and Horses Appreciation Society convention in Milton Keynes, David is quoted by The Sun newspaper as saying: "Bloody hell. Wonderful.

"I don’t feel like selling it now."

A mystery purchaser bought both hats.

Following the sales, David turned on his former Del Boy charm to joke to fans at the event: "Oi, oi, no need to worry - I’ve got 25 of these in the back of the van."

In August, David underwent surgery to have a "bionic body part fitted", forcing him to postpone an ‘Only Fools and Horses’ convention.

David said in a statement shared on his Facebook page about having to pull out of the planned 'Only Fools and Horses Convention': “I am so very sorry for the disappointment and all the inconvenience it may cause but we are having to change the date of the forthcoming ‘Only Fools and Horses Convention’.

"Unfortunately I have just been advised I need a new bionic body part fitted. I won’t tell you which part it is, or you will all want one!

"And don’t worry it’s not being supplied by Monkey Harris, it’ll be the pukka gear.”

He added about rescheduling the ‘Only Fools’ event: “I really hope everyone will be able to make the new date January 13th and 14th and we can all have something cushty to look forward to!

"These events are such an enjoyable celebration for myself and the rest of the ‘Only Fools’ cast, and it is such a privilege to meet so many of you, but I want to do it with the smile on my face I always have had."

David signed off his statement: "Once again, please accept my sincere apologies as it was not a decision I took at all lightly and I hope that you understand my situation. All cushty wishes until then."
