Osian Roberts: One of frontrunners for Wales manager job rules himself out

One of the frontrunners to succeed Rob Page as Wales manager has ruled himself out of the running.

Osian Roberts was previously an assistant coach for the Wales men's national team but has said he is committed to club Como 1907, which was recently promoted to the top flight of the Italian league system under his stewardship.

Last month, Page was sacked as manager after the team failed to qualify for the European Championships in Germany.

Writing on X, the 58-year-old from Anglesey thanked the Football Association of Wales (FAW) "for expressing an interest in approaching [him]" for the role of manager.

"As an incredibly passionate and proud Welshman I would love to become manager of Wales one day," he said.

"Currently, however, I am on an incredible journey with Como 1907 having helped lead them to a historical promotion to Serie A. I am committed to this wonderful club and our exciting project until at least 2026 and am forever thankful for their support and faith in me."

Roberts was assistant coach at Wales for four years from 2015 to 2019, before spending two years as assistant manager at Crystal Palace.

He has been caretaker coach of Como since December last year and is a regular pundit on Welsh-language broadcaster S4C.

Roberts wished the Wales national team "every success" as it embarked on "another exciting chapter".

"To the Red Wall and all the Welsh fans with whom I have gone through so much, the tears and the joy, I would like to thank you genuinely for the support I have always had from you and especially in recent weeks," he added.

Other names linked to the role include Craig Bellamy, Thierry Henry and Sam Allardyce.
