Over 3,000 couples married at India mass wedding

STORY: 1,850 Hindu, 1,147 Muslim, and three Buddhist and Sikh couples dressed as per their culture and performed rituals at the wedding ceremony organised.

"I am very happy that I got married today. This is a very good decision taken by the government for the poor people who cannot get married in a ceremony. So everything was done nicely," said one bride.

The couples were given 75,000 rupees ($918.20) as gift.

Mass weddings are very popular, especially among poorer sections of Indian society, as these reduce the worries of financial implications among the parents or guardians of the brides.

Traditionally, the family of a bride in India is expected to bear the expenses of a lavish wedding and also give "dowry" to the groom deemed as gifts to the bride.
