Paddy McGuinness has responded to the news that Top Gear will not return "for the foreseeable future".

The BBC announced earlier this week (November 21) that it has "decided to rest" the hit motoring show. Reports of the show's future began circulating late last year, when production of the 34th series was cancelled following presenter Freddie Flintoff's on-set accident.

In light of the news, McGuinness — co-host of Top Gear's last seven series, alongside Flintoff and Chris Harris — posted a series of pictures of the trio to Instagram, commemorating their time on the show.

"We were always going to be bellends but we were your bellends," he said. "Thanks for all the love over the years folks, it was very much appreciated."

"Given the exceptional circumstances, the BBC has decided to rest the UK show for the foreseeable future," reads the broadcaster's statement regarding the show's future.

"The BBC remains committed to Freddie, Chris and Paddy who have been at the heart of the show's renaissance since 2019, and we're excited about new projects being developed with each of them. We will have more to say in the near future on this. We know resting the show will be disappointing news for fans, but it is the right thing to do."

Following Flintoff's serious accident last year, presenter Harris recently gave an update on his former co-star's condition. Appearing on BBC Breakfast earlier this month, Harris told hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt: "I think he's healing".

"It's great to see him out and about being passionate about cricket," he added. "I'm sad I'm not doing Top Gear with him at the moment, but that's life. It's the best thing for him right now."

Top Gear episodes can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
