SINGAPORE — The Alzheimer’s Disease Association (ADA) has received a $1-million donation from Singapore-based palm oil firm Musim Mas.

The donation was presented by Musim Mas director and chief financial officer Alvin Lim to ADA vice-president Dr Ng Li Ling at Our Tampines Hub on Thursday (4 July). The ceremony was witnessed by Desmond Choo, Mayor of North East District.

The donation will go towards providing one year of financial assistance for over 300 less-privileged families who are unable to afford the $72-a-day fees to attend ADA’s four daycare centres in Singapore.

ADA programmes to be funded will include virtual reality workshops for caregivers of those with dementia to gain a deeper understanding of the illness, and a public awareness campaign in September.

The donation will also help in sponsoring cognitive and physically stimulating enrichment activities for ADA’s Family of Wisdom programme, which aims to foster greater interaction between caregivers and persons with dementia.

“We are thankful for the generosity and partnership from Musim Mas. With their donation, it will propel ADA to further extend and improve our programmes and services for our persons with dementia and their families,” said Dr Ng.

“The operational cost to run the Association is expected to rise year-on-year as dementia becomes more prevalent and with more people seeking help. All of us must recognise that it takes a collective effort from corporate organisations like Musim Mas, community partners and members of the public to tackle dementia.”

Choo also complimented Musim Mas’ generosity, and said in his speech at the ceremony: “Big corporations must see themselves not only as part of the global citizenry but they must also see themselves as active players in making this world a better place.

“When we are vested with so many resources not only in terms of money, assets, but expertise, it is imperative that we do more. Companies must play an active role to contribute to the community from which they build their businesses. They must find ways to build that marketplace, and not only gain from it.”

Prospective donors and members of the public can support ADA’s cause through various platforms here.
