SINGAPORE — A Primary 2 student from Palm View Primary School has tested positive for COVID-19, prompting the school to extend home-based learning for all students to Thursday (2 April).

The student contracted the virus from a family member and has not travelled during the March school holidays, the school’s principal Ming Kum said in a letter to parents on Wednesday.

“The student was well when last in school on Monday. The student continues to remain in high spirits while receiving treatment,” the principal added.

Students and staff who have been in close contact with the student have been placed on a 14-day leave of absence beginning Wednesday.

During the extension of home-based learning, the school will thoroughly clean and disinfect its premises at 150 Compassvale Bow. It will resume on Friday.

The school is one of several educational institutions with at least one student or staff member having tested positive for the virus, including Maris Stella High, Victoria Junior College, Singapore Institute of Technology, Raffles Institution, Fengshan PAP Community Foundation (PCF) Sparkletots preschool and Dover Court International School.

Both the preschool and the international school were identified as new clusters by the Ministry of Health last Wednesday.

Last Friday, the Ministry of Education announced that all primary schools, secondary schools, junior colleges and centralised institutes will conduct one day of home-based learning per week from this month, as part of additional measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

To date, Singapore has 1,000 cases of the virus, of which 245 have fully recovered and been discharged. 24 are in the intensive care unit, while three have died.
