The Lift Taskforce of the People’s Action Party (PAP) has completed its preliminary study on enhancing the safety and reliability of lifts in estates under the party’s care.

In a press release on Monday (5 Dec), the PAP said a total of S$45 million will be allocated by all PAP town councils over the next five years to implement four recommendations made by the taskforce.

The recommendations were accepted by 15 PAP town councils (TC), and include implementing steps to enhance the safety of lifts, improving lift servicing and maintenance regime, monitoring the performance of lifts and lift contractors, and working on protocols with HDB on lifts.

The taskforce, set up in July and led by PAP Town Council’s coordinating chairman Dr Teo Ho Pin, advised that all TCs provide information on lift performance and lift contractors to HDB for tender evaluation.

TCs were also advised by the taskforce to install a lift surveillance system in all lifts to ensure around-the-clock monitoring for security and safety purposes.

The system will provide provide real-time information to facilitate speedy rescue operations in cases of people getting trapped in lifts.

The system will also deter vandalism and misuse of lifts – common causes of lift failures.

Another of the taskforce’s recommendations is that all TCs work with HDB branch offices to develop a working protocol to manage the use of lifts by renovation contractors.

TCs were also suggested to jointly develop a dashboard management system to track the performance of lifts and lift contractors.
