Sir Patrick Stewart has spoken about the likelihood of a return for his character Professor X in Deadpool 3.

Professor X, or Charles Xavier, has appeared – and died – in the movies many times over the years, since first featuring in X-Men back in 2000.

He was last seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022, and in a new interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stewart has responded to speculation that he might appear in the upcoming Deadpool movie, now Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is returning.

Host Josh Horowitz said: "I would be shocked if your buddy Hugh Jackman, who is returning in Deadpool 3 – one of his first phone calls was not to you, Patrick.

"I’m gonna guess, I might see Patrick Stewart in a Deadpool/Wolverine movie."

Stewart smiled and responded: "It has come up. There’s been a process.

"But you know, the last two, three years have been so difficult, with both the labour problems and the health problems and Covid."

The acting legend previously said it was a "possibility" that Professor X could appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, due to be released in cinemas in 2027.

"Hugh Jackman and I looked upon Logan as being our farewell, given that I died in that film," he said. "Although I’ve been told I’ve actually died several times already. Know that, and you could get lucky."

In the same interview, Stewart also revealed that he would love to return to the stage one day, which he calls his "first love".

He said: "It was my first love. I would like to find an appropriate way of saying thank you and goodbye to it. And there are some ideas that I’ve got – the main issue with all of this is stamina.

"Because – I think a lot of film actors would be irritated by my saying this – but three hours on a stage, or even two hours on a stage, are the equivalent of 12 or 14 hours in front of a camera."

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are streaming on Disney+. Deadpool 3, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, is in production.
