Paul Mescal's mother shares joyous cancer update: 'I'm in remission'
Paul Mescal’s mum Dearbhla has shared an update on her battle with cancer, announcing that she’s in remission.
The 55-year-old was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer, in 2022, and has been sharing her treatment journey on social media.
In her latest Instagram post on Tuesday, she had some encouraging news to report, writing:”I AM IN REMISSION!!! I am Blessed.”
She continued: “Yes I will continue to take tablets, have blood tests but I am Dearbhla, just Dearbhla not Dearbhla with Cancer & I am lucky, joyous & feeling very, very excited about where my life will take me & oh the places I will go...
“Gratitude does not encompass all I feel for Dr Patrick Hayden & his teams at The Beacon & St James’. To cared for as I was in Unit 6 & The Berkitt wards was something to behold.”
“The love of my children, my husband, my family & dearest friends, the audience of you, the prayers of so many, the vibes sent out to the universe carried me through the hard times & lifted me when I truly felt done in.”
“My cup runneth over & my heart will forever hold yours. Thank you … now guys what’s next ???”
After sharing her positive update, her actor son Paul commented “Love you" alongside a red love-heart emoji while his sister Nell, who is a singer-songwriter, and sibling Donnacha both posted red heart emojis in celebration.
Dearbhla’s diagnosis became public in January 2023, shortly after Paul received his first Oscar nomination. The 28-year-old actor was nominated for Best Actor for his role in Aftersun, ultimately Brendan Fraser won for his turn in The Whale.
Following the news, his sister Nell tweeted a heartfelt photo of their reaction during a group video call and wrote: “My mum got a haircut today in prep for her chemotherapy and then Paul got nominated for an Oscar. Life is so crazy.”
That April, the Normal People star honoured his mum while accepting his Best Actor nod at the Olivier Awards for his performance as Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire.
In his speech, he thanked his parents and expressed his hopes for his mum’s recovery, saying, “I hope you get better.”
