Penn Badgley recalls Blake Lively’s epic prank convincing him that Aerosmith frontman Steve Tyler was his dad

"I was like, 'Are you f---ing kidding me? I am Steven Tyler’s son?'" said the "Gossip Girl" star.

Penn Badgley might be THE Gossip Girl, but Blake Lively is the queen of pranks.

On the latest episode of his Podcrushed podcast, Badgley revealed that the greatest prank ever pulled on him came from Lively, who managed to convince her Gossip Girl costar that Aerosmith lead singer and frontman Steven Tyler was his real father.

"I cannot muster a single eff to give about pranks,” Badgley told his podcast cohosts Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari. "I actually really admire people who do. Somebody who may or may not be known for this — Blake Lively is, as I recall, very serious about pranks. She pulled a remarkable prank on me. It is crazy.”

He joked, “Anyone who’s in my life and wants to pull a prank on me, go ahead and try, because I will never think about it. I guess I’m trusting, I guess it says something good about me, I just never think that somebody’s trying to pull a prank. So she had that going for her.”

Lively’s trick, which happened when the duo were in the midst of Gossip Girl, was especially impressive to Badgley because she managed to involve his team of representatives.

“I get an email, just like, 'There’s this press item that we’re trying to kill, but just so you know, somebody thinks or Steve Tyler thinks he’s your dad,’” Badgley recalled. “I don’t remember the phrasing but I remember being like… Didn’t even think about it for a moment because who in their right mind would think that that’s true.”

Despite his disbelief, Badgley said his publicist reached back out a few days later to say that the story wasn’t “going away.” Things escalated even further when he got a call from his manager and publicist, who let him know that Tyler was adamant about his supposed paternity.

Badgley was shocked: “At this point, of course I don’t think it’s true but it’s like, ‘How can Steven Tyler believe this? There’s no way! You have to be kidding. Steve Tyler of Aerosmith thinks that I’m his like illegitimate child?! What am I gonna do, talk to Steve Tyler? No, my publicist is gonna handle it because what else is gonna happen,’” he said.

At last, April Fools' Day rolled around, and somehow the concept of pranks was nowhere on Badgley’s mind when Lively suggested he call his mother about the paternity situation.

"My mom is so not an actress, so not a prankster either, and she’s upset,” Badgley recalled. “I’m like, ‘Mom why are you upset?!’ And then she takes a pause, that is like, the pause that sold me, and she goes, ‘Why do you think we moved out of Maryland?’"

He continued, "I’m telling you, for something like five to seven seconds, which is a long time, I was speechless and my world was rearranging. I was like, ‘Are you f---- kidding me? I am Steven Tyler’s son?’”

He even joked that he was envisioning a future where he could follow in his fake-dad’s footsteps and become a musician: “I’d always wanted to play music. And I didn’t want to exploit the man, I definitely didn’t want to do that, but I was just like… That’s a long time to think that your whole life is reordered.”

But before long, Badgley said he came to his senses. "I realized what day it was,” he explained. “The rationale kicked in.”

Plus, by the time he looked over at Lively, she "couldn’t keep a straight face and I was like, 'Ah, f------ April Fools.’”

Badgley and Lively spent six seasons starring opposite one another as Dan “Lonely Boy” Humphrey and Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl. They dated from 2007 to 2010 before an amicable breakup that saw them remain friends. Badgley is now married to Domino Kirke, while Lively shares four kids with husband — and fellow elaborate pranksterRyan Reynolds.
