Fans of Persona 3's female protagonist have released the latest version of a Persona 3 Reload mod that adds Kotone Shiomi to the game.

While Reload had a successful launch, one of the biggest complaints surrounding the remake is the decision to not include the female protagonist route from Persona 3 Portable.

Any hope that Kotone would be added as DLC diminished after she was not announced for the remake's expansion pass.

It's a huge undertaking but many Kotone fans have been working together on the 'Femc Reloaded Project', which replaces the male protagonist in Reload with Kotone. The idea is that the models, artwork, UI, and dialogue (including pronoun changes) would be updated to be more in line with a Kotone playthrough.

However, the addition of FeMC's exclusive social links with Saori and Rio and updated cutscenes don't appear likely, given it would require a lot more than just replacing existing assets.

This weekend, version 1.0.7 was released for PC. You can find it on GitHub here, and it's worth emphasising that it is still a work in progress.

However, many of Kotone's 3D models have been added and animated, significant work has been done updating the palette from blue to pink, and tracks exclusive to FeMC in Portable such as 'Wiping All Out', 'Time' and 'Danger Zone' have been remixed and have replaced the male protagonist ones.

The version update comes after Persona producer Kazuhisa Wada played down any chance of FeMC being added.

"It pains me to say this, but unfortunately there is no chance of including the female protagonist," Wada told Famitsu (via Persona Central) after 'The Answer' epilogue was announced.

"Of course, we also considered plans to include her, but the hurdles were too high. It was expected to take a long development period and would have cost several times more than Episode Aigis.

"Additionally, as the Persona Team, we have a mission to not only work on remakes but also on 'completely new works'. Our staff members are working in unison towards future developments you can look forward to, so we appreciate your understanding."

The female protagonist has become a fan favourite since her inclusion in Portable, particularly as the 'modern' mainline Persona games have favoured male protagonists. Kotone is also considered by many as a more engaging character than her male counterpart in Persona 3.

In our review of Persona 3 Reload, we praised the remake but said it was not a definitive version the game because of the "unfortunate" omission of Kotone.

Persona 3 Reload is out on February 2 on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Game Pass.
