Peter Kay has said Paddy McGuinness was a "pain in the arse" when it came to punctuality on set.

The two comedians co-starred in the Channel 4 sitcom Phoenix Nights from 2001 to 2002, with Kay playing Bolton doorman Max Bygraves and McGuinness playing his best pal Paddy O'Shea.

The show became a huge success for the broadcaster and spawned a 2004 spin-off titled Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere, though Kay admits it wasn't all smooth sailing.

Recalling the experience in his new book TV: Big Adventures on the Small Screen, Kay said: "All I can remember is a lot of laughter. Especially from Paddy and me. That’s when he managed to turn up for filming. He was a bugger for being late in the morning."

He continued: "Paddy slept in all the time. We’d get a message from his driver picking him up: 'He’s not answering the door.'

"Eventually, he’d get to us, and we’d all be sat waiting because we couldn’t film anything without him. We were in every scene together. A right pain in the arse."

Despite McGuinness' poor time management, Kay did write more material for the show. However, they were never able to film it because McGuinness had other work commitments.

"We had a really good laugh and we wrote more series. We wrote more specials but we’ve never got together and made them because of Take Me Out," he said.

But Take Me Out has since ended and McGuinness has expressed interest in rebooting Phoenix Nights, so it's possible we'll see Max and Paddy again in the future.

"There's always talk about doing another one. It's just time, it's just getting everyone together. But everyone is up for it," he said in 2019.
