SINGAPORE — Philip Antony Jeyaretnam has been appointed as a judicial commissioner of the Supreme Court by President Halimah Yacob on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said on Monday (7 December).

His term will begin on 4 January for one year.

Jeyaretnam, 56 – one of two sons of former Workers' Party leader J B Jeyaretnam – was conferred senior counsel in 2003 at the age of 38. He was one of the youngest lawyers to be appointed the title.

He read law at Cambridge and graduated with first class honours in 1986.

He was called to the Singapore Bar in 1988 and entered private practice in the same year as an associate in Robert Wang & Woo, before moving on to Chor Pee and Partners.

In 1992, he joined Helen Yeo & Partners and was a partner there till 2002, when the firm merged with Rodyk & Davidson.

In 2010, Jeyaretnam was then elected managing partner of Rodyk & Davidson, taking office at the start of 2011. In 2016, he led the firm’s combination with Dentons, forming Dentons Rodyk & Davidson.

Concurrently with his active practice in arbitration and litigation, he holds the position of Asean chief executive officer and global vice-chair of Dentons until 4 January.

He is widely recognised as a leading expert in arbitration, construction law and litigation in all major legal publications.

Jeyaretnam was also the president of the Law Society from 2004 to 2007.

Following his appointment, the Supreme Court will have a total of 25 judges including the Chief Justice and four Judges of Appeal, six judicial commissioners, four senior judges and 17 international judges.

Dentons Rodyk & Davidson’s deputy managing partner Gerald Singham has been appointed the firm’s managing partner, it announced in a press statement on the same day. His appointment will take effect from 1 January.

“Philip has been instrumental in making us a cornerstone of the leading global law firm. Together with his judicious temperament and insightful mind, I am confident that in his commitment to public service he will serve Singapore with distinction,” said Singham.
