A photo story: Gianyar carnival

Last month, the people of Gianyar regency celebrated their 242nd anniversary on Apr. 19, by beginning a month-long series of events jam packed with activities and cultural performances.

Gianyar is still one of the island’s less popular regencies, even though it is home to the village of Ubud.

While tourists usually regard Ubud as a place to be immersed in Balinese culture and a healthy lifestyle, the very same culture is actually practiced and preserved throughout the regency. This is what the locals are trying to demonstrate through the cultural parade.

Gianyar regent Agung Bharata said the event evoked the region’s identity, which is the land of art.

“The parade included 4,000 artists,” Agung said on Thursday as quoted by Antara News Agency.

The cultural parade kicked off in the city’s Gianyar’s Astina field and ended at the Kebo Iwa Terminal.

Its theme that time was “Taksu”, which refers to performances or objects that are so rich and soulful that they appear magical.

The participants’ performances were varied, ranging from members of New Life Sports organization (Orhiba), students of SMK N 3 Sukawati, the people of Payangan sub-district, Tegalalang sub-district, Tampaksiring sub-district, Sukawati sub-district, to Adi Merdangga from Gianyar Youth Artists Community, who carried out the closing performance.
