Dubai has been brought to a standstill overnight after the United Arab Emirates was hit by over 14cm of rain in a day – as much as the country expects in a year-and-a-half.
Schools and workplaces across the country have been closed and dramatic pictures show cars and buses completely submerged.
The flooding has brought flights to a sudden halt, with thousands of passengers stranded as the heavy rainfall prevented planes from taking off.
At least 20 people have been killed, 19 in Oman to the north of the UAE. Authorities warn more severe weather is to come, as much of both countries remain underwater.
Foreign tourists are flocking to Japan in record numbers and thanks to a sliding yen many are living like kings, splashing out on everything from kimonos to knives and slap-up meals."Thanks to the weak yen, foreign customers are buying a lot of handmade knives, even as prices rise," said Yuki Suzuki, 21, who works in a shop selling knives, another tourist favourite.
Hotel chain Premier Inn has been banned from advertising rooms "from only £35 a night" by the advertising regulator. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found that an online ad from November, saying "Premier Inn Edinburgh - rooms from only £35 per night" was "likely to mislead" viewers. Premier Inn's owner Whitbread showed the watchdog there were 377 rooms on offer in the Scottish city for £35 a night within a year of the ad running.
