Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set to end Chelsea nightmare with Marseille move close

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set to end his Chelsea nightmare by joining Marseille on a free transfer.

The 34-year-old has agreed a two-year contract with an option for a further year at the French giants, who qualified for the Champions League last season.

The Gabon international still needs to complete his medical and sign a contract but all parties believe the deal will go through in the coming days.

Chelsea initially asked Marseille for £5m but have accepted the need to get him off the club’s wage bill and will let him leave for free.

Aubameyang turned down moves to Saudi Arabia and the United States to continue his career in Europe.

He ends a difficult time in west London, playing for just 59 minutes under Thomas Tuchel after joining last summer in a £12m deal from Barcelona.

Tuchel was ultimately sacked shortly after Aubameyang joined and his form dipped under Graham Potter, who phased out the striker and didn’t select him for his Champions League squad after February.

Aubameyang leaves Chelsea after scoring just three times in 22 appearances.
