Substitute Wout Weghorst snatched an 83rd-minute winner as the Netherlands fought their way back to beat Poland 2-1 in the Group D opener at Euro 2024 on Sunday, leaving it late to win a contest they dominated.

Weghorst had barely been on the field when he finished an expert pass from Nathan Ake to secure a deserved three points.

Poland shocked with a 16th-minute opener from striker Adam Buksa, brought into the team to replace injured talisman Robert Lewandowski. He rose expertly to head home stand-in captain Piotr Zielinski's corner.

A deserved Dutch equaliser at the Volksparkstadion came 13 minutes later as Cody Gakpo's shot took a deflection off Bartosz Salamon.

Xavi Simons and Cody Gakpo are two creative, energetic wingers but neither have fully lived up to their potential yet. AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders will likely play a more advanced role in their 4-3-3 in support.

Underdogs Poland put on a brave face ahead of their opening Euro 2024 clash with the Netherlands, insisting that victory was possible despite the absence of prolific striker Robert Lewandowski and a poor qualifying campaign.

The 35-year-old, who has scored 82 goals in 150 internationals, misses out with a hamstring injury but will be on the bench and is in contention for Poland's other Group D games versus Austria and France.

"It is a great pity Robert Lewandowski cannot help us in this match," said midfielder and replacement captain Piotr Zielinski on Saturday.

"He is a world-class player and we will miss him. But whether it is me or the team mates, we will add something extra to achieve the goal, which is to win."

Coach Michal Probierz said his third game without Lewandowski was an opportunity for other players to shine during a generational shift which is underway in the Polish squad.

"There's nothing to hide, we will miss him. But other players will have to do what they can to get a result. I hope he will have other opportunities to play," he said.

Lewandowski has been out on the pitch for the warm-up but we’re not expecting him to play much of a part off the bench.

Ronald Koeman will send the Netherlands into their opening Euro 2024 battle with Poland confident they will be in the mix for the title.

Koeman, a European Championship winner as a player in 1988, believes this year's tournament is wide open, but that his team is one of the contenders.

He told a press conference: "In my opinion, there is not a big favourite, maybe the French team a little bit more than the rest because they have a lot of experience, they have won already big tournaments.

"But I think it will be an open fight between different nations - and one of them is Holland."

Skipper Virgil van Dijk was equally bullish as he prepared to lead his side into Sunday's Group D clash at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg.

Van Dijk said: "There are obviously very good teams around, obviously France, Germany, Portugal, England. But I think at a tournament, it can be totally different.

"Hopefully we can be at our best and be up there. That's the aim and that's what we're going to fight for."

The newly-laid potch at Volksparkstadion was off limits to both Netherlands and Poland the day before their opening game at the European Championship.

A new grass surface was laid at after host club Hamburg completed their home fixtures on May 19 in the Bundesliga second tier.

Four weeks later, UEFA wanted to protect it from the teams' traditional eve-of-game practice before the stadium hosts its first game at Euro 2024.

"We are not allowed to train here either, because of the bad quality of the pitch," Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said.

UEFA insist the surface "is in good condition and in order to preserve its quality the official (training) will take place at the respective team base camp."

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk suggested the pitch was similar to the one in Frankfurt where the Oranje lost to Germany 2-1 in a March friendly."It's not very good but both teams have to face it," said Van Dijk, a couple of hours after Poland captain Piotr Zielinski suggested: "It doesn't look that bad."

German police have confirmed a man “with an axe and incendiary device” has been shot ahead of Sunday’s Euro 2024 game between Poland and Netherlands.

The incident happened near the centre of Hamburg, which today is hosting the Group D game at the Volksparkstadion ahead four miles away.

It occurred on the Reeperbahn, which is a popular district for entertainment in the German city, at around 12.30pm local time, around two and a half hours ahead of kick-off.

Four loud bangs were reportedly heard.

Hamburg police have confirmed a ‘major incident’ in the St Pauli district of the city where today’s game is being held.

One person has been arrested and the incident appears to be over, with no apparent threat to this match.

A statement read: “A person threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device.
