SINGAPORE — The Singapore police are investigating after recent footage circulated on social media showed a boy apparently throwing a cat off the 22nd floor of a HDB block in Boon Lay.

The closed-circuit television video footage, which was time-stamped as occurring on Wednesday (14 December), showed the boy exiting a lift on the HDB block with the cat.

He then picked the cat up, looked around, before flinging the cat off the building. According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Singapore, said the cat died of its injuries after the incident.

Police have confirmed with Yahoo News Singapore that a police report was made on the incident.

The video footage caused outrage on social media. SPCA Singapore said in a Facebook post on Thursday that it is "deeply disturbed" by the actions captured in the footage.

"Animal abuse and cruelty have no place in our society. We stand strongly against animal cruelty and are working closely with the authorities on the case for the next course of action," it wrote in its post.

Similarly, the Cat Welfare Society also put up a Facebook post, saying that it has assisted the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) to link the cat's caregivers to investigating officers.

"We are extremely upset about this incident. One case of abuse is one case too many, what more when a minor is involved," it said in the post.

"We want the investigations to be carried out efficiently and without issues including any attempted witch-hunt of the individual and/or his family."

First-time offenders caught abusing an animal can be charged in court under the Animal and Birds Act and those convicted can be jailed for up to 18 months and/or fined up to $15,000.
