Powerful Thunderstorm Brings Hail and Heavy Rain to Geelong, Victoria

A powerful thunderstorm brought hail and heavy rain to Geelong on the afternoon of January 15 after much of the state of Victoria was choked with thick bushfire smoke earlier in the day.

Over 11mm of rain was recorded in Geelong, but the Bureau of Meteorology noted that nearby Avalon Airport received more than four times that rainfall in just 30 minutes.

Air quality in Melbourne and Victoria’s central and north-east regions were rated as poor by the Environmental Protection Agency on the morning on January 15. The smoky air conditions forced a delay to the start of qualifying matches for the Australian Open in Melbourne. Credit: Fairls via Storyful
