“Practical Magic 2” is in the works with Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman in talks to return

The Owens sisters are getting back together.

Hang on to your husbands, girls, because the Owens sisters are getting back together.

A sequel to 1998's witchy film Practical Magic is in the works, Warner Bros. announced this week. Deals are in progress for original stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman to return to their roles as sister witches Sally and Gillian Owens, EW has learned.

The actresses will also produce with original producer Denise Di Novi, based on a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman. Goldsman co-wrote the screenplay for the first Practical Magic with Robin Swicord and Adam Brooks.

The studio teased the announcement on the official Warner Bros. TikTok account with a video that used the same music from the original film and pointed to something dropping at midnight — a nod to the film's classic "Midnight margaritas" scene. Once fans tuned in, however, they presumed it was all for the news that the film is available to stream on Max. The surprise sequel announcement didn't come until Monday morning.

Bullock and Kidman starred in Practical Magic, based on the novel of the same name by author Alice Hoffman. Griffin Dunne directed the original movie, which saw Sally and Gillian, two witches raised by their eccentric aunts (played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest) after the death of their parents. They faced ages-old prejudices and one resurrection gone awry, while trying to find happiness in the face of a family curse that dooms their lovers to die.

The fandom around the film has lived on for years. HBO Max (now just Max) even ordered a pilot for a Practical Magic prequel series focusing on the aunts, Franny and Jet, set in the 1960s. But that treatment is presumed to be squashed.

Plot details on the movie sequel are unknown at this time, but Hoffman wrote multiple books in the series. The most recent, titled The Book of Magic: A Novel, was published in 2021 and involved three generations of Owens women coming together, as well as a long-lost brother.
