Pre-packed supermarket sandwiches recalled as 'precaution' over E.coli fears

A food manufacturer has recalled a number of sandwiches with salad leaves sold in major supermarkets amid an E.coli scare.

Among the 45 products affected are the Asda Chicken Salad Sandwich, Boots Chicken & Bacon Caesar Wrap and Sainsbury’s Peri Peri Chicken Wrap.

Consumers have been warned not to eat the products that have a use by of any date up to June 15 or 16 and instead return them for a refund.

It comes after health officials last week said that an outbreak was thought to be linked to a nationally-distributed food product. Around 113 people were thought to be affected.

A manufacturer behind sandwiches sold in supermarket stores is now recalling some of its products as a precaution.

Andrew Opie at the British Retail Consortium told the BBC: “Following investigations by the Food Standards Agency and UK Health Security Agency regulators, a number of manufacturers in the supply chain are taking precautionary measures and issuing a recall notice for a small number of products.

"Retailers affected are taking swift action to remove these products from sale and are working closely with the Food Standards Agency to take any further action needed to minimise risk to their customers."

In an alert, the Food Standards Agency said manufacturer Greencore Group was recalling a number of products “because of possible contamination with E. coli”.

However it stressed that E. coli had not been detected in the products, and that the move was a precaution.

E. coli are a diverse group of bacteria that are normally harmless and live in the intestines of humans and animals.

However, some strains produce toxins that can make people very ill, such as Stec.

People infected with Stec can suffer diarrhoea, and about 50 per cent of cases have bloody diarrhoea.

Other symptoms include stomach cramps and fever.

Symptoms can last up to two weeks in uncomplicated cases.

Some patients, mainly children, may develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) which is a serious life-threatening condition resulting in kidney failure.
