New Prime Video movies: the best films to stream this June

Just Mercy

Release date: June 1
RT score: 85% (critics); 99% (audiences)

A criminally (pardon the pun) underseen film, Just Mercy is a biographical legal drama directed by Shang-Chi’s Daniel Destin Cretton that proved (if any extra proof was needed) how talented its core cast – Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, and Brie Larson, all of whom have also appeared as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – are.

Jordan plays Bryan Stevenson, a recent law graduate who represents people on Death Row in the Southern US who can’t afford proper legal representation. Among his clientele is Walter McMillian (Foxx), who had been incorrectly found guilty of murdering a young woman. Okay, Just Mercy’s narrative might not be all that novel but, buoyed by its starry cast and steady directing from Cretton, it’s hard to argue the fact that it’s anything but a very good movie.

Layer Cake

Release date: June 1
RT score: 81% (critics); 84% (audiences)

The first of two Daniel Craig-starring films to appear in the latest update to our new Prime Video movies guide, Layer Cake is a Matthew Vaughn-directed British crime thriller that also counts esteemed actors like Michael Gambon, Tom Hardy, and Sienna Miller among its terrific supporting cast. Craig plans the film's unnamed protagonist, who works in the cocaine trade but is desperate to leave his life and crime and start anew elsewhere. As you've likely guessed, said individual's attempts to get on the straight and narrow isn't an *ahem* cake walk.

Considered to be the film that secured Craig's position as the next James Bond (more on one of his best 007 films shortly), Layer Cake is an absorbing black comedy-drama that's as subversively clever as it is brutal and menacing. A must inclusion in our new Prime Video movies spotlights section for this month.

No Country For Old Men

Release date: June 1
RT score: 93% (critics); 86% (audience)

This Coen Brothers-directed neo-western crime drama, which put Javier Bardem on the Hollywood map, is as gripping and ultraviolent today as it was upon its initial 2007 release. Based on Cormac McCarthy’s 2005 novel of the same name, it sees Tommy Lee Jones star as Ed Tom Bell, a sheriff investigating involving Vietnam veteran Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), who stumbles upon a large sum of money in the desert, and hitman Anton Chigurh (Bardem), who’s sent to retrieve said cash.

Widely considered to be the Coens’ best feature film, and easily one of the best movies of 2007, No Country For Old Men is a genuinely thrilling, compelling, and occasionally horror-fuelled adaptation that’ll stand the test of time. Stick it on your new Prime Video movies list ASAP.

Skyfall

Release date: June 1
RT score: 92% (critics); 86% (audience)

Returning to Amazon’s primary streamer after a number of months, Skyfall – the 23rd Bond movie and one of the film series’ best entries – is about as close to perfect evening entertainment as it gets.

Sam Mendes directs this darker take on 007, in which Bond is forced to return to action when a disgruntled agent from M's past comes back to haunt her. Armed with another commanding performance from Bardem – he plays the villainous Silva, who proves more than a match for Craig's seemingly indestructible Bond – Skyfall is a much more emotional affair than we've come to expect. Lives are lost, tears are shed, and Adele kicks the whole thing off with an absolutely killer title track.

See where it and Quantum of Solace, which is also back on the service, sit in our Daniel Craig James Bond movies ranked piece and then find out how to watch the James Bond movies in order if you’re planning a 007 movie marathon.

Oppenheimer

Release date: May 14
RT score: 93% (critics); 91% (audience)

One of 2023’s best movies, Oppenheimer wowed fans and critics alike with its dramatized events surrounding the life and legacy of Robert J. Oppenheimer, the titular theoretical physicist and the so-called father of the atomic bomb.

Across its occasionally arduous but mostly engrossing three-hour runtime, Christopher Nolan’s latest big-budget flick examines the mythos surrounding the man himself, including the less-explored parts of his life and the world-exchanging experiment that ushered in a new, horrifying dawn for humanity. With an absolutely stacked A-list cast (Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr, and Florence Pugh are its standout performers), terrific visuals, and uncomfortable themes that require deep examination, Oppenheimer is certainly one of the best Christopher Nolan movies, if not the best, we’ve seen.
