Prince George Made a (Very Forgiveable) Rookie Mistake at His First Soccer Game
Prince George was a little too excited to be the stands at his first professional soccer game, his father intoned in a new documentary.
In October of last year, Prince William and Kate Middleton brought their two older children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, to see Will's favorite team Aston Villa play an away game against Norwich City—the first game the young royals ever attended. The only problem? The Cambridges were seated in the section for home fans, and couldn't let loose the way the wanted to. On Twitter at the time, royal watchers even speculated that Will had tried to quiet George when he was cheering a little too loudly.
Will more or less confirmed this in a documentary that debuted on the BBC this week, Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health. Reflecting on the experience, he said he "enjoyed a good weekend of football," even if his enjoyment wasn't as visible. "I wasn't celebrating, that was the problem," the Prince explained, adding, "I was sitting with the home fans. George did my bit of celebrating for me."
Casual observers might wonder why Will is an Aston Villa fan at all, as the Aston, Birmingham-based team is hardly a natural choice for the London-bred Prince. Back in 2015, per Hello, the royal explained how his interest in the team came to be. "A long time ago at school I got into football big time. I was looking around for clubs. All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans and I didn't want to follow the run of the mill teams," Will said. "I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments."
It's a fandom that Will seems to be passing down to the next royal generation.
