Prince William Celebrates England's Soccer Win with a Personal Note: 'Emotional Rollercoaster!'

The Prince of Wales shared his congratulations as the Three Lions moved into the quarterfinals of the UEFA EURO 2024 in dramatic fashion

Prince William may not have been in the stands in Germany as England took on Slovakia in the UEFA EURO 2024, but he was keeping up with the action.

The Prince of Wales, 42, sent out a personal message to congratulate England's soccer squad on their victory on June 30. The Three Lions advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Slovakia. They trailed most of the game until a last-minute goal tied the score and sent them into extra time, where Harry Kane's second goal put them in the lead and secured them the win.

"Emotional rollercoaster! Let's go @England! Quarter finals here we come!" Prince William wrote on X.

The note was signed with a "W." Signing with their first initial is William and Kate Middleton's way of indicating that a social media message came straight from them rather than their communications team.

Prince William is the president of the Football Association, the governing body of English soccer, and often supports the squad. He traveled to Frankfurt Arena on June 20 to attend the group stage match between England and Denmark in the Euro 2024 tournament, showing his support for the team with a red, white and blue tie. Before kick-off, Prince William was spotted chatting with King Frederik of Denmark, who acceded to the throne earlier this year following Queen Margrethe's abdication, and posed for a photo with Frederik's 13-year-old daughter, Princess Josephine.

Before the tournament, Prince William met with the soccer team and passed on some advice from his three children: Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.

“The best bit of advice I got was to eat twice the amount you normally would eat," he said. "So, I now have visions of you running around with massive great tummies. So maybe take my youngest’s advice with a pinch of salt, particularly around the physio team."

The royal heir to the throne has been spotted at several soccer games, including for his favorite team Aston Villa, in recent months. The sport has given Prince William a lift as both his wife, the Princess of Wales, and father, King Charles, are undergoing treatment for cancer.

"He has been hugely buoyed by the results of Aston Villa," a source previously told PEOPLE. "You shouldn’t overlook the importance of soccer in these moments."
