Power Book III: Raising Kanan spoilers follow for season 3, episode 1 'Home Sweet Home' follow.

Raising Kanan returned for its third season a couple of days ago, and it did so with a bang.

Specifically, that bang was Malcolm Howard (Omar Epps) shooting his fellow detective Shannon Burke (Shanley Caswell) in his car, after she got a bit too close to exposing the depths of his corruption.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Caswell revealed that she expected her character to die sooner rather than later since she was snooping around and "sowing the seeds of doubt" in too many people.

That meant that she was fine with being written out of the show, but did ask that showrunner Sasha Penn gave Shannon a "nice and honourable" death scene.

Going into detail about Shannon always had the cards stacked against her, Caswell explained that the detective "was a fish out of water going into this job and being a female detective at the time, no one believed in her. She also had to deal with nepotism because of her father.

"[It gave her] this inner fire to prove herself against all odds. She’s being told to stop because this isn’t her place and it makes her dig in her heels harder. It fuels her stubbornness. She dies trying to reveal the truth, which is not how you play things in the Power universe.

"She was not playing smart and did not understand the world she was in. From the beginning when she’s green and Howard was showing her the ropes to that last scene, it proves that she is very uninformed about how to navigate this world."

Although Shannon had a gun on her, Caswell believes that the detective had no intention of harming her partner, which makes her death even more tragic.
